The pioneering lesbian experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer produced more than 80 films between 1968 and 2019; this program showcases an array of works that explore her artistic output, her as a being, and the ripple effects both continue to have.
We consider submissions that:
Are created by queer filmmakers and/or involve queer concepts, subjects, or themes.
Challenge conventional filmmaking practices.
All modes and lengths and from filmmakers at any stage of their careers are eligible.
Trans and BIPOC Filmmakers are encouraged to apply.
We’re looking for original, inventive experimental films that reflect the diverse perspectives of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Since 1987, our festival has offered a platform for filmmakers, artists, and creators to showcase their work, connect with audiences, and participate in meaningful dialogue.

We can’t believe it’s February already! The MIX NYC team is busy preparing for another year of innovative programming. But we’re not done reminiscing about MIX FEST 2025 just yet. Here are a few more highlights from last year’s festival.

In a context where we are once again under attack and finding our rights being pushed back, we want to thank you all for being a very bright spot in our lives, for being the community we always imagined having.
Being in this practice of working together to ask and answer these questions makes us stronger as a community and ready for anything that can be thrown at us.
MIX was founded during a time of great loss and crisis, when AIDS both decimated the queer community and made it fiercely resilient.
We are all in a practice right now, a devoted habit of asking each other what we need, what we want to achieve, and how we can support each other to make them happen.
But beyond that, we’re creating one of the few spaces in our lives that isn’t fueled by capitalism – instead, it’s run by mutual aid and with care.
We brought together artists and revelers for three days of queer, experimental films and celebration.
On the surface, we’re putting on a queer experimental film festival. Showcasing work that won’t be bought and sold, all of us working without monetary pay.
That’s a wrap on MIX FEST 2025! 👏 Thank you to the community of experimental film lovers and filmmakers who came out this weekend and made MIX FEST 2025 a huge success.
The MIX team is immensely grateful and proud of what we all achieved at MIX FEST 2025.
We’re looking for volunteers to help with ticket-scanning, bartending, coat check, photography, set-up, breakdown, and more. Click through to our form for more details: forms.gle/xMGMEGqptpLb...
