A big part of the problem is that voters are a reactive variable, as we've now seen demonstrated in the last election. We can't count on them to vote against republicans just for the sake of it, so we need a new strategy, where presidential candidates adapt their platforms to the demands of their constituents. It's unfortunate that harm reduction votes aren't automatic, but since they aren't, we then need to influence voters by changing something about the platform they're reacting to. So the ball bounces back to the Democrat's court. We need to do something about them, not just ideologically but strategically, or we continue to lose. That's why voting against republicans isn't step 0, even though it should be.
