Positions remain open! Both PhD and postdoctoral opportunities are available on scientific foundation models. An additional position is also available on AI for regional climate models (jointly with @xavierfettweis.bsky.social). Do not hesitate to apply!
Major publication from my PhD student Josip Brajkovic in the Journal of Hydrology: Regional Studies. Every degree counts! For every 1°C "gains," we'll see an increase in extreme precipitation intensity of +7% and a frequency of /2.

Congrats to Brice Noël, climatologist, winner of the 2025 Arne Richter Award from the @egu.eu 👏 His cutting-edge work on glacier melt, polar climate modeling, and sea-level rise is shaping global climate science. @xavierfettweis.bsky.social

The melting season over the Greenland ice sheet is starting with likely one of the highest melt event for a month of May. The omega blocking responsible of the drought over Europe advectes very warm air masses along it west size towards the Greenland ice sheet.
A study, using our climate model MAR, lead by my colleague Brice Noel (FNRS) and published in Nature Communications, links the rapid mass loss of Patagonian glaciers to a poleward shift of subtropical high-pressure systems.

The polar vortex is "living" its final hours. Its disorganization usually occurs at mid-spring. So, in short, the high pressure system, currently over Western Europe, is not about to move. This suggests a drought in the coming weeks and South => North (heat) or N => S (late frosts) circulations.
Picture of a measurement site on the Greenland Ice Sheet. In the foreground is a fixed‐wing uncrewed aerial system (UAS), looking like a small, light plane with a wing span of 3 m. The UAS is prepared for take-off on a launching system with a high pressure flask that is filled with air through a connected compressor. In the background are white, heated measurement cabin and a turbulence measurement system (eddy covariance) that is connected with a thick bundle of cables to the cabin.

🧪 We present a unique dataset of 465 (!) in situ measurements of the #water_isotopes in vapor up to 1500m above the #Greenland Ice Sheet.
🌍 We demonstrate the use of water isotope profiles to reveal gaps in climate model physics.
Repeat photography showing the accelerated retreat of Ossoue Glacier in the Pyrenees between 2000 and 2023, with extinction planned before 2030.

Will you be able to explain to your children the cause of this disappearance (planned for before 2030) ⁉️
Because none of this happened naturally... ⛽️🔥

What happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic. It affects you.

The melting season in Svalbard usually starts in June. This year, it has been started in February!

Bel article contrant les affirmations erronées de Trump sur le climat. C'est un exercice qui prend un peu de temps mais ça doit se faire.

An aerial view of a South Greenland glacier from a commercial flight. The top third of the image is the thick while Greenland ice sheet with a few grayish rock peaks protruding. In the middle of the picture, coastal mountains and glacier drainages are visible, and in the lower right, blue ocean dotted with dozens of white icebergs.

This article sums up quite well what I think (as well as my colleague Prof. Jean-Pascal van Ypersele) about President Trump's recent decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. For me, the biggest risk in the medium term is mainly his Minister of Efficiency...
