have you decided which flavor of empty nest psychosis you and the other half will be adopting, and what hobbies you each will be finally resuming/pursuing? or just gonna catch up on sleep for a few years first? 😂

lol! a food truck just drove by. it was a modified ice cream truck that still had the horn. the horn had been modified to play the “price is right” theme song. amazing
passkey is imho one of the most important security developments that touch consumers and also one of the worst consumer rollouts i ever witnessed because every company involved treats everything like an enterprise customer solution
bingo. the main differentiators are the game changing over time (evolving story beats or seasons, etc) and season passes or limited time content acquisition/purchase windows and sometimes also “live events”… and endless micro transactions like paid “convenience” or “vanity” options/services
world of warcraft is the MMORPG that basically started the “live service” trend with their holiday/seasonal content and progressive story content drops. them adding paid in game assets and services really set the pace. non-MMO live service games usually differ in that they add battle passes, etc
“live service” is different from just a subscription supported game, too. it implies the existence of seasonal content, battle passes, micro transactions and usually lots of loot boxes. it’s the whole pay-to-win and pay-to-dress-up model that irks people, not that games require money from customers
NASA and Mamdani are proving that Americans are desperate to see their money spent in ways they feel good about.
This, however, is not the same thing as simply spending the money on things we would feel good about but never know happened. People need to be able to see it.
i’m looking to make a career transition
looking to move from managing and running everything at current job to a security researcher role at MSFT or one of a few security focused companies
to whit, i could really use reference letters, from anyone willing to provide one honestly and effectively 😅
More Vintage Computing museums should rent out cloud access to their rare hardware.
SDF (Super Dimension Fortress) does it, and it’s freaking awesome.
I’m literally logged into a Sun SPARCstation…anyone can do this for free, right now. Just SSH in.
because this is getting some decent traction, I’d like to point out that you can donate / become a lifetime member with some pretty cool perks for only $36:
(they also have like, neat VPSes + website hosting stuff!)

Comic. [Person and person with white hat facing two boxes stacked with $80 price tag and sale tag on each box.] PERSON 1: They want $80 for this? I could make one myself for $10 in parts, an hour of work, a trip to the hardware store, another $30 in parts, another few hours of work, two more trips to the store for $20 more in parts, another hour of work to redo the first hour of work because I messed up, and $80 to buy this when the one I made breaks.

(Accidentally) using radioactive solder is a good way.
IBM’s Blue Gene/L frequently crashed when running simulations at LLNL.
Turned out that alpha particles from the lead solder in the board carrier were slamming the L1 cache with bit flips.
New: an entire industry now exists for Airbnb hosts to use AI to speak to their guests. I looked into it when one guest tricked the AI into providing a French toast recipe. I found companies that analyze guest message sentiment. Guests not pleased, obviously

New from 404 Media: a hacker has compromised Doublespeed, an a16z-backed startup that uses a phone farm to flood social media with AI-generated influencers. Hacker tried to use the account to post a meme calling a16z the antichrist

honestly not worth most people worrying about and lots of the hype is just hype. anthropic been acting afraid of their own models for years. it IS handy for finding bugs with less goading but still needs considerable help exploiting or fixing things most of the time. opus did/does quite similar tbh
“Regarding VeraCrypt, I cannot publish Windows updates. Linux and macOS updates can still be done but Windows is the platform used by the majority of users and so the inability to deliver Windows releases is a major blow to the project,” he continued.

Cisco, IBM, and the data center lobby is trying to kill an *already existing* right to repair law in Colorado by massively fearmongering lawmakers into exempting their tech under the guise of "security" of "critical infrastructure"

A great executive I sold a tv series to, key to some of biggest tv shows of the past few years has just lost their job, trades reporting it’s possible their studio is looking to streamline development with AI. Feel terrible for them, but us screenwriters have been screaming ‘it’ll come for you too’.
