Very pleased to have succeeded in my amendment to restore $1.1 million to climate change response budget (with some reductions including a 500k cut to consultants spend so no rates impact).

Thanks to my green team @rebeccamatthews.bsky.social @geordierogers.co.nz @jonnyosborne.bsky.social Wellington City Council climate mitigation budget lives on. Thanks to all councillors who voted in support. A big mihi to our community for emailing councillors to say no cuts to climate action!

Officials warn move on orders will make homelessness worse Government agencies are scathing of the proposed move-on orders - which official documents say will see an estimated six people imprisoned every year and up to 818 cases taken to court.

Officials slammed move-on orders in just-released advice, warning they would add:
- 6 people to the prison pop
- 200-800 court cases
- Make homelessness worse

I want to hear in their own words, how they can justify this to the children who will have to live with climate breakdown

Wellington council budget cuts - big climate cuts Deputy mayor Ben McNulty has been behind closed doors taking a scalpel to council spending and today, some time around noon, invites Wellington to see his masterpiece.

We’re in a climate crisis, a 40 percent cut to our climate response budget makes no sense financially or for the future of the city. Next week’s proposals include a total gutting of cycleway funding, & a backdown on commercial rates for Air B&B providers www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/3609...

Wellington council budget cuts = big climate cuts and a lower rate rise This year’s rates increase will be 7.4% as opposed to the forecast 9.4%, which was itself down on earlier predictions - if all cost-cutting recommendations are adopted.

Our Climate Change programmes are working! Last year Wellington city reduced emissions by 5%. Now is not the time for Climate cuts! We’ll only have to pay more later!

'A bit tired, a bit ratty': Heated exchange between Willis and Labour MPs at Parliament The Finance Minister has called the opposition's behaviour "unbecoming" after accusations of name-calling and conspiracy-thinking.

“Under questioning in the meeting, Willis also confirmed the government had no intention of buying offshore carbon credits to meet the 2030 Paris agreement as part of a "performative awards ceremony" even if that meant it would breach its commitment.”

‘By-pass My Ass’ veterans say NZTA’s listening in name only Wellington’s veteran campaigners criticise NZTA’s consultation as it tries to make once-in-a-generation highway changes to the heart of the capital.

Other cities are enjoying the vibrancy and economic benefits that pedestrianisation & creation of spaces for people bring. But Welly is still haunted by a dinosaur 1960s motorway extension to be fast-tracked through the heart of the city. @julieannegenter.greens.org.nz @yadana.bsky.social

I did not vote for a pause or review to the Golden Mile. Progress has already been too slow and I do not wish to contribute to that. I sincerely hope that the project will survive this review.

Wellington’s controversial Golden Mile paused for review Only the Greens wanted to push on, even after news of another cost blowout.

I did NOT vote to review the Golden Mile today. Cities across Aotearoa & the world are revitalising their centres, attracting people back into them. We'll now put NZTA funding at risk, & costs only ever increase. We need to ask how we do it? Not say let's review it!

Surreal but genuinely lovely to welcome our new Mayor and Council at today’s inauguration. Handing over the chains to @andrewlittlenz.bsky.social felt like closing a very meaningful chapter, one I’ll always carry with me. I truly wish the team the best as they take the reins of our beautiful city.

Just before the new council starts its journey, one more mihi to @misswhanau.bsky.social for the commitment to leading Pōneke in a 5% reduction in carbon emissions last year. Just about half of this reduction is from on-road emissions due to changes the city has made. Ka Rawe! No mean feat!

The new Wellington City Council will include 5 Labour councillors and 4 Green councillors, plus Andrew Little, giving the two party "coalition" an increased governing majority - 10 out of 16 votes, compared to 8 under the previous council.

A viable cycling network is a vital safety-net for people and the economy. Is the cheapest transport network to install and maintain. A measure of a city’s competence and civility.
