UNC faculty are sounding the alarm: the unilateral creation of a School of Civic Life and Leadership violates established shared governance, erodes institutional trust, and threatens academic freedom by ignoring the vital role of faculty in curricular decisions.

Sun and clouds above the Miller Campus Center on the SUNY Canton campus, the host of the 7th and final Realizing the Promise of Public Good U barnstorming tour stop, organized by the SUNY University Faculty Senate and Faculty Council of Community Colleges, for this academic year.
The last Realizing the Promise of Public Good U barnstorming tour stop of the academic year—here @sunycanton.bsky.social—is in the books! Wonderful conversations on shared governance, academic momentum, seamless transfer. It’s more important than ever that we meet across roles, campuses, & sectors!
This isn't just about Texas; it's about the future of higher ed everywhere. @aaup.org @texasaft.org

about how our Provost's plan for "viewpoint diversity" hires further erodes faculty governance at my university. (And never mind "veritas"!)
8 hires--but humanities hiring generally has been frozen since 3/25.

I'm excited to share that we've made a collection of historic Supreme Court Records and Briefs available via

In his second term, Donald Trump has assembled a Cabinet that is more openly obsequious and destructive. Linda McMahon, his Secretary of Education, “has played the role of a friendly grandmother wielding a hatchet,” Zach Helfand writes. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/DGtGsI
“We call on Emory to make substantive commitments to limit cooperation w/ federal immigration agents to the minimum required by law. We urge Emory to inform the community precisely where ICE may or may not enter without a warrant…”

We'd be seeing way more of this if blue states had functional higher education policies
What is academic labor? Who performs the type of knowledge work we call academic labor, of what does it consist & what might its aims be?

We filed suit against the Trump administration (again) today to block the implementation of an unlawful executive order that seeks to undermine inclusion & equal opportunity, threatens government contractors w/ criminal prosecution, & chills protected speech.

That Yale report on what's wrong with U.S. college saw some trees (high cost, unfair admission, etc.) but missed the forest: the 60-year right-wing crusade to undermine higher ed, from slashing budgets to stifling speech

Maybe Harvard needs to be abolished. I like the sound of U Mass-Harvard.
Read on to learn just a bit about what making #PublicGoodU real means and the hard work it takes!
The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.

"The University of California system, the California State system, the City University of New York — these are the institutions actually educating America’s workforce, actually moving first-generation students into the middle class, actually delivering on higher education’s democratic promise."
"the colleges that dominate the headlines are not the colleges that most Americans attend
their core mission: to serve students from all backgrounds, at a price families can actually afford, prepare graduates for real careers and meaningful lives."

DOJ demanded voter files from all 50 states.
DOJ sued 31 states for refusing their demand.
My law firm intervened to protect voters in those cases.
DOJ is now 0-5.
My firm is 5-0.

I’m under no illusion that our reports will get more views or reads or headlines than Yale’s. But we really need to rethink what are “leading” universities in the United States. (Of course I’m proud of Stony Brook’s former president. SBU’s new one is a gem!)
