Republicans loved gerrymandering as long as their opponents were committed to fair maps. Now that Dems are responding in kind, conservatives aren’t having as much fun. But the only thing worse than constitutional hardball is unilateral constitutional hardball. (🎁) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

I understand the self interest that AI salesmen have to push their product, but the grasping way they’re doing it — the internet version of a traveling salesmen putting his foot in the door so you can’t close it — is only going to drive more people away.
To “my students and to anyone who might listen, I say: Don’t surrender to AI your ability to read, write and think when others once risked their lives and died for the freedom to do so.”

Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

NEW: Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has declared April 2025 as Confederate Heritage Month.
He did so at the behest of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a neo-Confederate organization that espouses “Lost Cause” ideology, which whitewashes the role of slavery in the Civil War. 🧵
No, they actually do suck and aren’t useful.
The gobsmacking grift of the $239M slush fund that Team Trump created around the inauguration should have been Page 1 news, but too many are too numb to such corruption

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond.
I hope you’ll read and share the piece.

Just a reminder that Trump/DOJ continuing to let Abrego Garcia sit in CECOT is *a crime*. Deprivation of rights under color of law is a crime. Was it an "error" at first? Maybe. But once they were aware of the error, and ordered by a judge to return him, and then refusing, it's willful 1/
Sometimes it is important to say things very clearly and directly, so I wrote this.

Disgusting.
Musk's Twitter is not the first time the nation's richest person (who also is a terrified reactionary with a childlike understanding of history, culture, & political science) devoted a big chunk of his fortune to creating a right wing propaganda machine. americanarchive.org/catalog/cpb-...

Nothing says “anti-establishment populist outsider” more loudly than a billionaire POTUS, assisted by the world’s richest man with a VP handpicked by venture capitalist P Thiel, who will implement the plans of the Heritage Foundation, a 50 year old DC institution funded by the nation’s plutocrats.
I still think this could explain a great deal about our timeline
A thread on democracy and "memory work" inspired by this excellent 2-part podcast on a Marine involved in January 6. Nations are defined, to a great extent, by the stories they tell themselves about their past. How we remember (or forget) Jan 6 will shape our future. www.npr.org/2026/01/01/1...
