Infographic showing Drake Equation variables to calculate probability of alien life. Eight triangular icons display values: 6 new stars/year, 90% stars have planets, 0.1 habitable planets per system, 9% chance of life developing, 0.9% chance of intelligent life, 0.09% chance of space communication, 10,000 years of civilization signals, and 2 potential civilization redevelopments. Each value illustrated with simple icons in orange, green, blue, and purple triangles.

Pie chart titled "PERKS OF BEING AN ARTIST". The chart has three unlabeled segments (light blue, orange, purple), implying the absence of the listed perks: "money" (red in legend, not on chart), "work-life balance" (purple in legend, purple on chart), and "making family proud" (yellow in legend, not on chart). The joke is the disconnect between the expected perks and the empty or ironically represented segments.

A diagram comparing gunshot wounds in movies versus real life, showing a human figure split down the middle. The left side (labeled 'In movies:') is marked in red showing supposedly non-fatal wound areas, while the right side (labeled 'In real life:') is completely white, implying that any gunshot wound can have serious consequences. The image critiques the unrealistic portrayal of survivable gunshot wounds in movies.

A heatmap reveals the most common 4 digit PIN numbers, visualised from the data leaked from several large data breaches. The horizontal axis plots the frequency of the first two digits, the vertical axis the second two digits. Clear (and somewhat predictable) patterns emerge from the dataset. A diagonal line of ‘heat’ from bottom left to top right reveals people choosing double digits (2323, 6868 etc). A strong horizontal line at the 19 point shows people using their birth year as a PIN code (1971, 1998 etc). And a large amount of heat in the bottom left shows how people commonly use their birthdate in a MM/DD or DD/MM format. The most common code in the set is 1234.

This image is a line graph from GALLUP titled "Perceived Respect for Women in U.S. Society," which tracks the percentage of respondents who believe women in the United States are treated with respect and dignity over the period from 2011 to 2024. The graph displays two distinct lines: a green line representing the responses of Men and a blue line representing the responses of Women. Both lines show a general downward trend over the period, indicating a decrease in perceived respect. The data consistently shows that Men have a higher percentage than women in agreeing that women are treated with respect. The gap between the two groups is explicitly labeled at various points on the chart with a number representing the percentage-point gap between men and women. The largest recorded gap appears in 2018 (22 points), where only 48% of women felt respected, compared to 70% of men. By 2024, the gap has narrowed to 18 points, with roughly 68% of men and 49% of women agreeing that women are treated with respect.

So many thoughts & questions about this one. The U.S. stands out globally for its steep decline and also the growing divide in how men and women perceive the issue, particularly distinct in the 15-44 age group.

A playful scatterplot (using dog silhouettes instead of dots) depicts the best dog, according to data. On the vertical axis is a measure of public popularity. On the horizontal is an indexed score of several metrics to consider when owning a dog (cost, temperament, no. of genetic ailments etc). Each dog is coloured by category (sport, toy, hound etc) and sized (S, M, L). If a dog is facing left, it's kind of a dumb dog. If it's facing right, it's an intelligent dog.

This bar chart titled “How many people still die of lung cancer after quitting smoking by age [OC]” shows, per 1,000 people, the number who develop lung cancer by age 75 (red bars) and the number who die from it (black bars), across six smoking behavior groups: Never smoke, Quit before 30, Quit before 40, Quit before 50, Quit before 60, and Never quit smoking. For “Never smoke,” 4 get lung cancer and 3 die from it. For those who quit before 30, 20 get it and 15 die; quit before 40: 30 get it, 22 die; quit before 50: 60 get it, 44 die; quit before 60: 100 get it, 74 die; and for “Never quit smoking,” 190 get lung cancer and 141 die. The chart illustrates that quitting at any age reduces risk compared to continuing, but risk remains elevated relative to never smokers, with earlier quitting yielding substantially lower numbers. The legend clarifies red = “Get Lung Cancer by 75”, black = “Die from it”. The post is attributed to user daysleeperrr and marked [OC] (original content).
