The NW Highlands - unbeatable scenery and great walks - the area around Ullapool in particular. If staying closer to the Central Belt a trip over to the Isle of Arran would be high on my list - again for great scenery and walks.

Scientists and comedians join forces to get climate crisis message across Video series launched in which comics translate climate science into down-to-earth language

I discovered the world of climate comedy thanks to @maxboykoff.bsky.social & @mattywin.bsky.social - and it is so therapeutic!

I’d love to curate a starter pack on climate & humour, but I only have 3 accounts, with @belinaraffy.bsky.social.

Baba Brinkman + Chuck Nice aren’t here.

Suggestions? 🧡

Inside the dash to save the Getty Villa from the Palisades fire: A timeline The Getty Villa activated its emergency operations center at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, and within two hours, the fast-moving blaze had reached the grounds. Here's how the staff, museum and precious art were...

The Getty Villa prepared for fire and those preparations and what staff on the ground did worked. Most cultural heritage doesn't have this kind of protection, which is a tangle of many layers, but wow - I'm so glad the Villa made it through

2024’s Record-Breaking Heat Brought the World to a Dangerous Threshold. Now What? Global temperatures last year crept past a key goal, raising questions about how much nations can stop the planet from heating up further.

β€œ1.5C was never the difference between safety + ruin, between hope + despair. It was negotiated by govts trying to answer a big q: What’s the highest global temp increase β€” and associated level of dangers β€” societies should strive to avoid?”

Well said @zhonggg.bsky.social & @bradplumer.bsky.social

A map showing the pattern of long-term warming estimated from the HadCRUT5 global temperature dataset

A map showing the pattern of long-term warming estimated from the HadCRUT5 global temperature dataset

Where has it warmed the most and the least?

Observed warming has not been uniform and matches well the pattern that climate models predict

1. Warming has been greatest over the northern polar regions

2. Warming is generally greater over land than over the oceans

Two future possibilities of the future warming stripes - rapid action or delayed action.

Two future possibilities of the future warming stripes - rapid action or delayed action.

What will the future of the warming stripes be?

2024 could be the start of a stabilisation of global temperatures, or it might appear to be a cool year.

Which one of these stories becomes reality depends on our choices today, and every day until then.

We are likely to regret not acting sooner.

Summary of temperature, rainfall and sunshine for the UK in 2024.

Summary of temperature, rainfall and sunshine for the UK in 2024.

Here in the UK, 2024 was the 4th warmest year on record, meaning the last 3 years have had 3 of the 4 warmest years. It was quite wet and a pretty dull year overall.

December has been pretty mild overall, dull and with average rainfall. This #dataviz shows the weather/climate summary for 2024.

UK 'not ready' for extreme weather, says climate change head The head of the Climate Change Committee calls on the government to invest in adaptations now.

@elpinchbeck.bsky.social is right. Adaptation has been a lesser priority for too long.

Not only are the costs of events like #StormDarragh significant, but climate impacts are holding back the govt's renewal agenda.

Introducing myself on Bluesky with some recent work.

In April, I published the Climate Ready Plan for Scotland's Railway - setting out what we're doing over the next 5-years to prepare our railway for changes in our climate.

What will the world actually look like at 1.5Β°C of warming? By the time we hit that temperature, further climate changes will already be locked in and unavoidable.

I wrote this on 1.5Β°C eight years ago

"Depending on climate sensitivity and natural variability, we could conceivably see the first year above 1.5Β°C as early as the late 2020s – but it is more likely to be later"

It's looking like I was a bit too optimistic 🧡
