Great news from #Jersey! The Government has unanimously passed a new Heritage Law to protect our island’s precious #heritage. We are now aligning with UK & international standards. 🏛️🌍⚱️
A big step forward, but still a lot to do for #archaeology and, Spoiler alert, discoveries are waiting ahead! 🤫

St Lawrence excavation, Day 15:
The excavation has come to an end. A bit more recording to do and the site will be backfilled next week. 📝
A talk was given at the #SociétéJersiaise and we spent a lovely evening with the team. I was lucky to have my "heroes" by my side over the last three weeks. 🦸🏼♂️
St Lawrence excavation, Day 14:
Excavation is coming to an end. Area 3 gave us a hard time with postholes all over the place, but we are nearly done with them. 💪🏼
Ros from #Underground came and helped with her GNSS survey equipment. I can't wait to work on the map 🗺️
Last day tomorrow... 🥁
Good evening Hannah. Unfortunatly not... If you're in Jersey Friday afternoon, I am giving a talk about the dig at the #SociétéJersiaise in town. Otherwise that would be for next time!
St Lawrence excavation, Day 13:
In Area 2, the top part of the fill of Ditch 14 gave us a little surprise. 🎁
What looked like a domestic oven at first is more likely to be a wall that went through high temperature. A section would help to understand but in the meantime, we got sherds! 🤌🏼
St Lawrence excavation, Day 12:
Today was our Open Day and we had a busy afternoon with the visits! Many thanks to the public for the interest and the lovely discussions we had. 🫰🏼
Now it's time to finish the dig and, as usual, the unexpected things will pop up soon... 😬
St Lawrence excavation, Day 11:
We're now moving to Area 3 where thirty features were waiting for us - mostly postholes! 🕳️
Hopefully the depth, the fills and the finds will help to play dot-to-dot during the post-excavation phase. 🤞🏼
St Lawrence excavation, Day 10:
Tahnee organised a few sessions with @jerseyheritage.bsky.social for the Young Archaeologists' Club (YAC). It is always a pleasure to have children involved with the dig! 👨👨👦👦
Here, she is showing the "wall" she's been excavated and a few pottery sherds found inside. 🏺
St Lawrence excavation, Day 9:
Meet the Team! 👥
I am grateful to all our volunteers for their hard work over the last days and for their interest.
Here in #Jersey, we are so lucky to have such a dedicated team which counts many of our #SociétéJersiaise Archaeology Section's Members. 🇯🇪
St Lawrence excavation, Day 8:
Halfway there already. Only a week and a half until the end of the dig.⏳
Ed and Emilia moved to Area 2 while the last features of Area 1 are getting excavated. In ditch 11, Thérésa had her first Iron Age rim sherd and even some animal teeth. Congratulations to her! 👏🏼
St Lawrence excavation, Day 7:
Today was Drawing Day for a few of us, so Olli, Dave, Ruth and Tahnee have been busy taking measurements. 📐📝
In the meantime, some hidden features were recognised but a little bit of rain would help at this point...! 🌧️
St Lawrence excavation, Day 6:
Features are getting excavated like this nice ditch which gave a little bit of pottery. The local shale is sometimes tricky and a few pits and postholes are playing hide and seek... 👀
Hopefully Marc, our Head of Archaeology Section, has his drone ready for action! 🛩️
St Lawrence excavation, Day 5:
At the top end of a ditch, next to the entrance of the farmstead, a nice deposit of limpets appeared. Agatha cleaned the top part today and started some drawing. 🐚
Bones might be preserved underneath...!

St Lawrence excavation, Day 4:
Features are now getting excavated and there is plenty of work for everyone. ⛏️
Cassie, who joined our Archaeology Section last year, found a lovely sherd of pottery.

St Lawrence excavation, Day 3:
The team has been cleaning a lot today and we are nearly done by now! 🧹
Tomorrow we will start digging and doing some test pits. A lovely feature (wall?) is seeking more attention.
Finds are expected at this point! 🏺
St Lawrence excavation, Day 2:
The three areas have now been opened with the digger and about 30 features have been identified so far in Area 3 - mostly postholes.
This is heaven for a Protohistorian. 👼🏼
St Lawrence excavation, Day 1:
The first ditch appears and it is massive! We are digging the entrance of a farmstead and finds will help to date the site - possibly from the Iron Age.❓
In the meantime, limpets are back in the trench once again! 🐚
Smells Like Dig Spirit ⛏️
The next excavation of the #SociétéJersiaise is starting next week.
Regular updates incoming!
Our dig at Vieux‑Vy‑sur‑Couesnon (Brittany, France) started a few days ago. ⛏️
We’re uncovering a 2,000‑year‑old murus gallicus gateway at one of the Riedones’ oppidum.

🚧 Dig season begins!
Back in the field from today through August - starting with a 2 week excavation in Brittany. 🇫🇷
This first project is a collaboration between @eveha.bsky.social and the Field Archaeology Department of the Société Jersiaise. 🤝
Updates soon from the trench! 🏺

Great morning at the Island and Island Studies Conference 2025, Jersey. Great and powerful opening talks Sean Dettman, Helen Dawson, Stuart Fell and Jon Carter. @jicasjsy.bsky.social

Thank you @jpdemoule.bsky.social, Jean Guilaine, Jean-Jacques Hublin and @sophie-krausz.bsky.social for your op-ed in @lemonde.fr. 📰
Hopefully, it will be a warning for the French public about the threats facing archaeology. 💪

Preparing for the future should never mean forgetting the past. ⌛
Following my previous post, next is a Simplification of Economic Life mentioning (Art. 15 bis C, para. 18) that major national projects would no longer be subject to (Preventive) Archaeology "obligations". 👷♂️🚫👷♀️
Praise the work at Notre-Dame, yet prevent archaeologists from repeating it elsewhere. 💣
A necessary strike in response to incessant budget cuts and worrying proposals. ⚖️
But where are the answers?
Full support to the archaeologists standing up to protect our heritage and to avoid having to say one day: "Nous fouillions, c’était votre histoire." ✊

For #FindsFriday, a great example of solidarity. This ring was lost by a volunteer working on @jerseyheritage.bsky.social Neolithic Longhouse… and found again! 💍
Sadly, it won’t become an artefact for future archaeologists! A reminder that good things happen when we work together. 🫂
"Quite simply, this is one of the most important and exciting Iron Age period discoveries made in the UK"

Kiel Conference is already over for me, but I wish I stayed longer! ☺️
Great discussions with colleagues during our session and comparaisons with #Jersey, France, England and Ireland.
And what a pleasure listening to Prof. Mehmet Özdoğan's keynote lecture on 'Becoming Neolithic'! 🧠#KielConference
Surely a prince in disguise! 🤴🏼
