When I'm writing, I agonize over my word choices, but the process *is* my voice. It's how thinking happens.

I've rewritten *this post* six times trying to find the best way to say what I'm trying to say. It isn't "perfect," but it's my voice *because I wrote it.*

So much of art in the 20th century was centered on the role of the process as part of the art, or even the process itself as art.

It's frankly depressing to see people acting like the process is just the boring part you have to go through to get to the art.

If you like space, you're going to get aliens. If you like history, you're going to get aliens.

And aliens almost by definition require conspiracy theories to explain why they would be around but never seen in public.

I'm a STEM historian (in training), and watch a lot of science and history content, which means the site is a minefield of godawful bullshit conspiracy theories.

I try really hard to curate what I engage with to avoid this kind of thing, because I don't want to contribute to their metrics.

I'm mostly annoyed that I didn't see the shift toward alien talk earlier. The thing *started* almost respectfully discussing the lives and careers of a couple of scientists who had recently died, then ramped up the bullshit really quickly once the dam was breached.

It's obviously not a novel observation, but I don't do true crime because, aside from disrespect for victims, it almost invariably veers into conspiracy theories, then absolutely invariably, when someone says "aliens" it's a matter of time before they start on Satanism, globalism and Jews.

YouTube suggested a video about a bunch of scientists who died. It took the woman who made it 30 minutes to get to alien conspiracy theories; immediately know the algo is going to decide I like that shit.

Sure as clockwork, it just suggested her latest - an antisemitic Rothschild rant.

Does that seem like a horrible thing to say? Even worse to talk about betting about it?

Yes. That's the point.

People have placed bets on more horrific topics, and the only reason anything is off the table is because of regulatory pushback, feeble as it is.

It is against BlueSky's moderation policy for me to say what I think about the people who created, operate, and/or use Kalshi and Polymarket.

There's no ethical version of using those sites, and they don't even provide the nebulous value that LLM people at least pretend to do.

They're just evil.

They aren't being undercut at all.

These sites make money on every bet regardless of who is betting and who wins or loses, and they've outright argued that insider betting is beneficial because it "reveals truths" or whatever.

There's nothing to game, because they *want* unethical behavior.

I'm not saying the pandemic was a good thing. I'm saying that it did give me impetus to improve myself, to reconnect socially, and to reject pointless labor, because it felt to be like it laid bare how absurd a lot of things that had been "normal" now seemed.

This is the exact opposite of what happened to me.

I worked through the whole thing, and became incredibly galvanized by my experiences. I worked out more regularly, cooked more, became more active, and ultimately was motivated to go back to grad school.

There's no universal takeaways here.

And that wasn't an "evasion": I found it legitimately weird when you started talking about "charges" and really had no idea what the fuck you were on about.

You can find a whole bunch of examples of my hating AI and I still won't see that shit as bullying.

There are multiple and *conflicting* brain mechanisms at play here, aside from the general shittiness of pretty much everything I've seen LLMs and genAI "create."

It's led to actual, outright suicidal ideations. So no, I'm not super convinced it's the anti-AI crowd that's doing the bullying.

I've spent the last year of my life being constantly bombarded with genAI shoved into every fucking element of my day to day, which triggers *my* neurospicy ass by making it nearly impossible to focus as I get stuck spending time finding workarounds to get past the constant intrusions.
