Hawaiian monk seal RQ21 rests at sunset on a quiet Maui beach.
I haven’t seen too many Hawaiian monk seals on my trips to Maui, so it was great to get a chance to photograph this 23-year-old female seal, RQ21, a few years ago.

This is a great, but very unsettling, article. Many of my colleagues working on climate say that the insurance industry will eventually force us to take notice, but I'm not sure it will make us change our behavior.
Natural disasters—like Hurricane Andrew, which tore through Florida in 1992—are becoming increasingly common, and the US insurance industry is now facing an annual tab of $ 100-billion. 💰

Thanks, Steve. I use DSLRs for my day job (studying whales and dolphins) but am looking for something a little more compact and mirrorless for my birding hobby. I'll check Birdforum.
Bluesky birders - what are your recommendations for a mid-level camera for an experienced birder? Weight is a consideration, as I do most of my birding on foot (or on boats). 🦉#birds
They typically live far from shore and spend very little time at the surface, so it’s not that surprising…
Actually we think there are a fair number of undescribed beaked whales…

Let me ask some of my lawyerly friends.
Good question. I'm not sure that compliance involves trying to apportion the unidentified species to stock.
Phew. As a new kid to this school, I'm glad I found the right lunch table.

Had an excellent briefing yesterday on the bycatch of killer whales in deepwater flatfish trawls in Alaska. Ten animals taken so far this year - another case of highly social odontocetes depredating fishery catches and suffering mortality as a result. 🐋🌎
Right back at you.
