Hello to the new followers who have somehow discovered my flying stats website :) not sure where the burst of traffic has come from!
Posts by James Harding
I do still have my old school paper logbook going, and a lot of my colleagues still only use paper! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Lots of new stats added to my website:
🕰️ +23.8µs of time dilation due to cruising speed/altitude
☢️ 23.032 mSv of radiation (19% of a chernobyl liquidator)
🌲 65,000+ tonnes of CO₂ emitted

I also have a new interactive logbook exporer:

I’ve been going deep on hardware storage systems! For anyone who wants to put their (small hardware component) problems in a 📦, here is what I’ve found:

I know that almost everyone north of 50N got to see them yesterday, but here was the view from 65N flying Vancouver to London a few days ago! #aurora #northernights
Just launched something I've been tinkering with - a visual timeline of my life in weeks 📅
Each colored dot represents a notable moment.
The scary part: weeks pass by at an alarming rate, but they're long enough that they all fit on one page.
Check it out: jameshard.ing/weeks
I think some photos are required!
England status: hot 🔥
At least @home-assistant.io makes the climate data look nice
3-panel comic. (1) PERSON WITH SHORT HAIR to Person 2: Shining laser pointers at planes is a federal crime. It’s incredibly dangerous. PERSON 2: Oh, because it can blind the pilot? SHORT HAIR: That’s one reason… (2) [Laser pointed at flying airplane] (3) [Cat close to the size of the plane pouncing on airplane and taking it down]

Haha, and doing 4 in a day one feels like the ping-pong ball. London -> Spain -> London -> Spain -> London ad infinitum
Since the "hop" time is fixed for each flight, the long-haul flights at the end are super quick, but its not easy to add per-hop speeds with the library that I am using!
Since the number is still non-zero, I quickly threw together a new screen for my split flap display, pulling data from my privacy-friendly Umami self-hosted server.
I’ve been thinking about making a webpage where anyone on the web can upload messages to the board in my living room. Dangerous?
Thanks for sharing! :) which graph/globe do you like best?
James Harding flies A350s out of London, and he's got a computer engineering degree, so he's got gorgeous globe visualizations of his flights plus lots of others. jameshard.ing/pilot/globes may be of interest to @erwin-hattingh.bsky.social
This is madness. I have historically had an average of around 5-10 visitors to my website a day, mostly looking at an old Flask tutorial that I wrote orignally almost a decade ago. Hacker News traffic alone has brought around 140K pageviews in two days.
Cloudflare has really saved my poor little VPS in the last 24 hours! My flight data API (a tiny Flask service) is the only part not heavily cached, and it has survived despite the hammering.
A serial lurker on Bluesky until now! Thanks for the mention :)
Thank you :)
Wow! I posted my interactive pilot logbook webpage to Hacker News on a whim, and it has somehow reached the top spot.

Turns out there are lots of software people who are also into aviation!
Thank you! :) how did you stumble upon my site?
The not sure about the rest of the paint scheme, but the tailfin is a big plus.
