The Outer Hebrides in February can be a bleak place. I faced 10 days of grey and rain, and although it is a place that looks great in the rain I was longing for light. Finally, a break. All afternoon, light flooded over Luskentyre and the whole west coast of the island. It gradually built into the inevitable end of the day, but I could not have predicted just how good it would get. My wife decided to stay in the car and read her book while I wondered along the sand dunes, thinking she had the better idea and the light was gone, but when I found my way to the top of the dunes I noticed the passing shower moving towards the Harris Hills then… an explosion. The setting sun catching alight in the low clouds drifting along the hilltops. The dunes were aflame too, warm, inviting, catching the wind as it whistled through the landscape. Then, out of nothing, a magnificent rainbow arching upwards, it’s twin just visible to the left. I talk about magic a lot. But this was the purest distillation of magic. And because it is the nature of magic, it was brief, fleeting, but left an indelible mark on me.

For St Andrew’s Day here is Luskentyre on one of the most dramatic evenings I’ve witnessed on the island.
