Often I'm embarrassed to watch recordings of talks I've given because I see all the things I wish I had done better, but this is the best talk I have ever given: practical advice on reaching the public, from social media to op-eds to books and TV appearances.

Ha good way to put it!
Why is so much pop math writing like “the formula involves addition—an operation where the values of numbers are combined, as in 5+3=8—and semi Hodge-theoretic neo-Riemannian integration. Surprisingly, the authors proved the formula is quasi-invertible when the Sasquatch locus is homogeneous.”
What do volcanoes, Darwin, cholera outbreaks, cell phone networks, and robots have in common?
A single geometric pattern.
Friends in NYC, come hear me speak about this on Apr 14 at @momath.bsky.social.
“The Credibility Crisis in Science” is larger than we realize. Did you know that many papers are “accurate” but data is inflated by ~20%? @1autumnleaf.bsky.social and spoke with Thomas Plümper and Eric Neumayer about this. @mitpress.bsky.social

Indie authors don't get enough credit.
No publisher backing them. No marketing team. No agent.
Just them, a laptop, and a story they believe in so much they bet everything on it.
That takes more guts than most people will ever have.
@scinews.bsky.social has a feature aimed at kids 9+, and for the past few months I've been chatting with a journalist to help with a piece explaining social media algorithms to this demographic. Very happy with how it turned out--useful for kids and adults alike! www.snexplores.org/article/how-...
Pop quiz. Consider this quote: "This is the last effort of the human mind, and when this project is carried out, all people will have to do is be happy."
Was this by Hinton in 2016, Altman in 2021, or Amodei in 2026?
None. It was Leibniz in the 1600s.

Math isn’t just numbers. It’s people.
In our latest episode, Hortensia Soto, former @joinmaa.bsky.social president, challenges the idea that math is purely abstract—and instead shows how deeply human it has always been.

If you think politics has nothing to do with math… think again. Gerrymandering, fair representation, and even AI policy all hinge on math.

I loved working with @macfound Fellow, Lauren Williams, on this episode.
People need to realize that “Math research is a marathon, not a sprint.”
Listen to what she has to say about resilience in research, mentorship, and why kindness matters in math.
🎉Announcement 🎉 For Women's History Month, @vnbateman.bsky.social and I have a very special four-part miniseries featuring women who changed the world by applying mathematics to real-world problems on @breakingmath.bsky.social
The first episode is out now. 👇🏻
“If one doesn’t ask, it doesn’t happen.”
Former @amermathsoc.bsky.social President, Bryna Kra talks about leadership, institutional change, and why silence is the biggest risk facing mathematics today.
A powerful conversation about courage and responsibility.

The guy is a billionaire leading one of the most important tech companies on the planet, trying to post a company-defining tweet, but he can't find a charger for his laptop. Sure, buddy, we believe you...
What I learned from our time with Ian Stewart was that the best mathematics is told through story and fostered through collaboration. @princetonupress.bsky.social #math #AI #science #academicsky

Interesting
This is the first full episode since I joined @1autumnleaf.bsky.social as cohost of @breakingmath.bsky.social, it's w/ a math prof I've known and looked up to for 20 years, currently president of the AMS. This chat, about the meaning and future of math, left me feeling both informed and uplifted.
Math will increasingly be about asking the right questions, finding the right definitions, deciding which results are most important, and finding powerful applications.
Honestly, it’s always been about this, but the burden of technical work may lessen with AI—and that’s great news!
It’s amazing how many more people care about pure math research now that computers are doing it.
Movie pitch: Heated Rivalry, but instead of hockey players it’s employees from OpenAI and Anthropic.
You asked us questions and we answered! Our latest episode is up.
