China has made some adjustments to administered prices since losing the WTO case,. Most of those stock levels were built in the late 2000s and early 2010s and they have come down some over the past few years.

China has large stocks, but India rice really stands out re exports.

2/ Its the comparison with countries of similar income levels where it gets dicey without knowing more about what their total food expenditures look like.

Sure. I am not arguing that the US doesn't spend a smaller share of total household expenditures than most of the countries on the chart--most are far poorer than the US and would be expected to be spending a larger share of income on food.

Big issue--this only includes food expenditures at home. 56% of US food expenditures are for food away from home. These are not included in the chart. Unfortunately, comparable data for other countries oftentimes don't exist so you can't easily compare the two.

Plus the added bonus of the smell of mimeo ink.

Under the Cairns proposal, the cap on overall trade distorting support for the United States would be a hefty USD 31.183 billion., but the US would have exceeded this cap in 2019 and 2020 (due to record COVID and trade war payments). www.datawrapper.de/_/Mdd61/
