You shouldn't have to stay quiet about these things, but saying you don't feel the need to be nice feels hypocritical because it sounds like if they can't be nice, you won't either.

Kindness should always be the thing to strive for.

Also, I understand that although it is upsetting to be belittled, attacked, or mocked, that should not justify being rude to strangers based upon a common characteristic, especially when you don't know them.

So although there are some groups, they are not representative of atheists as a whole or non-believers in general.

I don't see the need to poke at an entire group of hundreds of millions of people. If there is an issue with an individual or organization, it would make more sense to discuss them.

While there are atheists who form groups based on being atheists, the entirety of atheists are not a group in any sense. That's part of my point. Christians all have a defining belief in a god and their prophet, but atheists are people from all over the world and are very diverse in every category.

All this is to say, I am sorry if people have had poor experiences with others who claim to be atheists before. But there really is no reason to pick on atheists specifically, as the behaviors are neither unique to atheists, nor are they indicative of atheists as a whole.

It's a stereotype.

Especially when those people are only grouped together by something they have no choice in, like their skin color, gender, sexuality, etc.

Atheists similarly are bound by a lack of choice. You cannot choose to believe in something that makes no sense to you, it would be performative at best.

The thing that is really the most worrying, is the "othering" that happens to groups of people based on singular personal experiences. These anecdotes of "this one time this guy said to me" and "I once saw this person do this thing" is what leads to stereotyping of entire categories of people.

The entire point of being an atheist is that atheists don't do something. They don't believe in gods.

Having those folks be organized would be like people who don't play sports having a "No sports allowed" club. It wouldn't make much sense.

I think on an individual basis, everyone should be kind.

I understand you've had some bad experiences with people who are atheistic before.

Considering that, I don't know how atheists are supposed to talk about this in the open more, as they are not only a minority that gets targeted even in 2025, but they have no organized structure.

All proselytizers bother people. I don't understand why specifically atheists are an issue to the point of making it the main issue.
