126 years ago, Harlan Hubbard born in Campbell Co. Hubbard spent 8 years with his wife, Anna, drifting along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. In 1951, the couple built a simple home at Payne Hollow, a secluded area along the banks of the Ohio River in Trimble County.

Our Research Library is be CLOSED today, April 11, to accommodate students competing in the National History Day State contest. Our campus will be open to the public as normal, but expect larger crowds due to the students, families and schools participating in NHDKY!
The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library will be closed to the public tomorrow, Sat., Apr. 11, due to hosting the NHDKY State Competition. It will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday, April 14.

Wooden presentation plaque displays tiny moon rocks collected by the Apollo 11 astronauts as well as a miniature Kentucky flag. The plaque has a beveled wooden base with a rectilinear post. A triangular wooden block is joined to the top of the post. A Plexiglas cover is nailed to the slanted face of the block over a miniature Kentucky flag. A crystal sphere containing moon rocks is glued to the top of the Plexiglas. Aluminum plates bearing inscriptions are glued to post and on post's foot.
This presentation piece displays moon rocks collected by the Apollo 17 astronauts as well as a miniature Kentucky flag. The piece is a wooden plaque that is felt backed with beveled edges. A crystal sphere containing a moon rock is glued to the top with an aluminum label. A miniature Kentucky flag is displayed in the middle with a Plexiglas cover nailed over it and an aluminum label below.
As NASA’s Artemis II crew heads home, remember part of that story is already here in KY.
Moon rocks from Apollo 11 & 17 were shared with all 50 states as goodwill gifts.
Small pieces of the Moon now rest here at home, linking past missions to the next giant leap. 🌕

178 years ago, Zachary Taylor chosen as Whig Party’s candidate for US president after four rounds of voting. Henry Clay, ultimately lost the nomination. Taylor’s supporters championed him as a hero of the Mexican-American War and as a safe political bet for the Whigs.

83 years ago, Claude Likens, of Kosmodale, served as SGT with 192nd Tank Battalion keeping a journal while a POW in the Pacific during WWII. He survived Bataan Death March, where 60-70,000 POWs forced to march through Philippines.
