‘Everyone is Replaceable’: Death Rattles Oregon Amazon Facility A worker died at Amazon’s Troutdale warehouse last week. Employees were told to look away.

A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week.

For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead.

One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.

This is a 47% drop in SNAP recipients. They don’t have the capacity to implement new HR1 rules. Medicaid work requirements are up next—they’ll be even harder to administer and the outcomes will likely be even more catastrophic than what’s happened w/SNAP.

Well, one sociologist would say that to help men find work, we need to get "manly men" to let go of the idea that "girly" jobs are a threat to their masculinity.

NYT: US Fertility Rates Drop to Another Record Low The fertility rate has been falling since 2007, in large part because of a plunge among teenagers

There are some clues in the age breakdown: The fertility rate for teenagers dropped by 7 percent from 2024’s figure, setting another record low for the group. Since 2007, the rate for teenagers is down by 72 percent, and since 1991, when teenage fertility rates were at a high, the rate is down by 81 percent.

Why I don't trust anyone a little too obsessed about falling fertility rates

I’m so glad somebody directly estimated this. It’s even more extreme on a per capita basis. The average American retiree gets more than 10x more public spending than the average young person.

Delighted to share our revised paper (w/ @juliaturner.bsky.social & @jacobbastian.bsky.social ) showing that Universal Pre-K has broad effects on local labor markets — effects well beyond only mothers. Larger effects for full-day programs. nber.org/papers/w33767

How a 'Universal Basic Neighborhood' Can Help Americans Live Longer — Streetsblog USA Want to increase your chances of living to 80? A new paper argues we need to start with our neighborhoods — and we need to do it for everybody.

Really enjoyed this conversation about applying the idea of "universal basics" to neighborhoods, why it it *is* possible to give every person access to good transit, biking, and walking options, and why we actually can't afford not to do it. It's like Blue Zones without all the secret pension fraud!

🧵Universal child care is the future. But the Mamdani admin's choice to repeat unintended consequences of deBlasio's universal pre-k implementation is a choice to prolong the struggle of child care educators for a dignified wage and will harm children and families.

I did not expect one of the most prominent socialists in the country to keep his promise with a policy that prolongs child care workers' struggle for dignity in their labor.

Hunted and Banned Efforts to control Black mobility—from early passports to the Fugitive Slave Act—laid much of the groundwork for today’s border regimes.

I have a new essay in @bostonreview.bsky.social, a transnational look at how slavery and the policing of Black mobilities across Atlantic empires shapes contemporary border regimes, and how this informs how we conceive of abolition www.bostonreview.net/articles/hun...

The gender friendship gap turns out to be driven almost entirely by white men's uniquely low levels of friendship closeness. And among white men, higher socioeconomic class predicted even lower closeness. The most privileged group has the least close friendships. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Fascinating new study about men’s friendships.

There’s a lot of evidence here that the “male loneliness crisis” is actually a white, wealthy man problem. Other men are building friendships with similar depth to women’s friendships.

"Parental Rights" and the Authoritarian Family For advocates of "parental rights," family autonomy becomes both reward and weapon, extended to those who conform and withdrawn from those who do not.

"The parental rights project does not seek to dismantle state power but to reconfigure it—shielding families that reproduce a preferred social hierarchy while mobilizing governmental force against those that challenge it." www.liberalcurrents.com/parental-rig...

“having and raising children is one of many ways we can spend our time, and whether we choose to do so depends on how it is valued, how safe and manageable it is, what kind of labor it entails and how much help we have, and what other choices are available to us.”

Guess What Moderate Democratic Voters Aren’t Anymore? Moderate. Two new polls suggest that moderate Democrats, too, want higher taxes on the rich and some measure of economic populism. Moderate isn’t what it was in 1992.

Moderate Democrats with columns in newspapers are constantly saying the Democratic Party is way too liberal on "social" issues. Moderate Democratic voters in real life do not feel this way. With some polling data from @gelliottmorris.com and @dataforprogress.org. newrepublic.com/article/2074...

Child care workers earn less than 96% of jobs in New York State and it's Kathy Hochul's fault. There will never be enough child care for every family that needs it as long as this is the reality, but every year she does whatever she can during the state budget to keep them in poverty.

Not to be THAT feminist, but I knew this was the case before opening the article. Men see fatherhood as an abstract milestone that's a proof of their virility, women see the associated costs.

Not to mention that women not being locked into domesticity is the core of the antifeminist backlash today.
