Blimey!

“But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the Strait of Hormuz is open and people are having a wonderful time.”
I’ll never forget watching The Wicker Man with my outer Hebridean mum. “I just don’t know where there got all that wicker from”
Well, this is pretty awful.
You don't create a support group or do welfare checks on these sorts of people. You don't just ask them to delete posts. You kick them out of your party.
Google to tap into gas plant for AI datacenter in sharp turn from climate goals Texas power plant would emit 4.5m tons of carbon dioxide per year, more than that of the entire city of San Francisco
"Asked by Axios last week at an energy conference in Houston about how natural gas jives with the company’s clean energy goals and overall strategy, Google’s head of advanced energy, Michael Terrell, said: “We don’t have anything to say on that.”"

If you want to get drunk in a bookshop, Ghent has more than one option: photo 1 is the Japanese section of Bookz & Booze, and 2 is Le Bal Infernal, a 2nd-hand book café. I like Ghent.

Happy Tax Day, New York. We’re taxing the rich.
Is it, though?
Great alt photo description!

Bizarre!
Ugh - the Royal Marsden helped to save my wife’s life, and they’re trying to do so for many, many more people. And NIMBYs are trying to stop it because the lifesaving building is taller than they’d like?? Give me strength. (Via Looking For Growth)
@pjtheeconomist.bsky.social times column this week is an incredibly pithy (even by his standards!) summary of the issues and changes in working age welfare - including why spending on it isn't out of control.
Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health. When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.” Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

William Jackson repeatedly targeted British MPs of Asian origin demanding their deportation
it feels quite bad that it's basically impossible to argue that much of the modern right in the west has become both entirely intellectually shallow and deeply, fundamentally morally corrupt without sounding like a tedious teenage tankie, because it is.....the factual truth
Roger Scruton's Scrotum Futon, a stupid cartoon about the rightwing philosopher's genitals doubling up as a foldaway bed.
Cartoon featuring Roger Scruton from the June 2019 issue of Viz. Scruton died about 7 months after it was published, but not as a result of it, as far as I know.
Well, thank you. Your work is very impressive. Good luck in your next steps.
I missed this at the time but am delighted to discover that, back in 1999, Roger Scruton came at the kings - and absolutely missed, by a fucking mile!
