An infographic titled "Magnolia molecules: perfume and medicines" details the plant's chemistry. Pink petals contain cyanidin and peonidin pigments. Aroma molecules include aldehydes like 2-nonenal and heptanal, and terpenes like alpha-pinene and linalool. Medicinal bark compounds include magnolol and honokiol, which have antioxidant properties. It also highlights yulanosides, unique phenylethanoid glycosides. Chemical structures for these compounds surround a central magnolia branch photo.
Did you know magnolia petals are edible?
I didn't until this year, and discovering that they are led me to this exploration of magnolia chemistry (and experiments in making magnolia gin).

Keir Starmer actually put this in a briefing to Labour MPs of 'useful questions to ask' today. The PM knew of Mandelson's relationship Epstein when he appointed him.
And yet thinks he can still exploit the grief of the victims. This is why he is not fit to be Prime Minister.
Sam Coates reports "We've got some breaking news"
It turns out that the head of the civil service told Starmer he should get all the security vetting done before he announced who'd be the new ambassador
"Clearly Starmer chose not to do that, [he] chose to ignore formal advice"
This is the inevitable endpoint of one of the truly unifying political projects of the 2010s: ensuring that comically bigoted far right crackpots should decide what is and is not racist, a thing almost the entire political/class bent their will towards.
Concern grows for Suella Braverman as she completely forgets she spent nine years as part of the Conservative government, including two periods as Home Secretary, responsible for immigration.

A large white waterfowl with orange feet stands in front of a door. On the door is a cardboard sign secured with tape that reads, "DO NOT LET THE DUCK IN." Adding insult to injury, I think the duck might be a goose.
Whatever you do,
UNICEF is outraged by the killing of two drivers of trucks contracted by UNICEF to provide clean water to families in the Gaza Strip. The victims were killed by Israeli fire in an incident that took place early this morning at the Mansoura water filling point in northern Gaza. UNICEF extends our condolences to the families of the men killed.
UNICEF just needs to release the hostages
Faiza Shaheen: "Do they [the govt] think we're idiots.. Starmer has a track record of lying.. he made 10 pledges.."
LK: "Politicians often change their mind about things.."
The msm can't acknowledge what Faiza is saying, despite it being incontrovertible, because they were complicit
Trevor Phillips said on Sky News this morning that "everybody in the country who could read a newspaper" knew in advance of the Mandelson appointment that he was problematic
is this the same Phillips who interviewed Mandelson on October 08 2023 and didn't ask any questions about Epstein friendship?
Totally fine that large parts of the British government are jumping into bed with a company whose public statements are "we are, at a fundamental level, absolutely batshit crazy neofascists".
could making a serial rapist the figurehead of the modern right have pushed women left?
no, it's the hysterical broads who went crazy
I don’t mean to be probing but I think we should probably start asking why the present system of market capitalism has created an endless army of neurotic managers and executives who all talk like this as they engage in the greatest act of state looting seen since the Berlin Wall fell
easy to get numb to how far previous norms have been eroded, but to see a company that our government plans to embed deeply in the UK's key infrastructure release the corporate equivalent of a school shooter manifesto is really something. companies used to have to at least pretend not to be evil!
People out there arguing coldly that it should be a crime to try to live as a trans person.
These are dangerous fanatics, and they have the ear of at least 3 UK political parties, and most of the media.
Alex Wickham @alexwickham • 1h X And a Whitehall source says: "One by one we have demolished all of the arguments put forward by Olly's 'allies.' We have the receipts." The govt is coming out swinging tonight and seems to think it can show Robbins was the one who got it wrong Alex Wickham • @alexwickham • 2h New: The government has published a statement saying Olly Robbins was not prevented by any law from telling ministers about the Mandelson vetting recommendations Keir Starmer attempting to disprove a key argument made by allies of Robbins in recent days Statement on Constitutional Reform and Governance Act (CRAG) 2010 - implications for national security vetting. The Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010 (CRAG) does not prevent civil servants from informing Ministers of UK Security Vetting recommendations. What CRAG says is that Civil Servants make decisions on vetting and clearance. But no law stops Civil Servants sensibly flagging UK Security Vetting recommendations, while rightly protecting detailed sensitive vetting information, to allow Ministers to make judgements on appointments or on explaining matters to Parliament. Background/detail: Section 3 of the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010 gives the Prime Minister (as Minister for the Civil Service) the power to manage the Civil Service, including appointments (with a similar provision for the Foreign Secretary in r of the Diplomatic Service). Section 3(4) clarifies that the management pow Act do not cover national security vetting. The Explanatory Notes to the A clear that national security vetting remains under prerogative powers. + Prerogative powers emanate from the Crown but are exercisable by Ministers ar when /and on when) dolanator or athenice authoricar hu Minictare or ac doridad

University workers have traditionally been among the most loyal of Labour voters. This is the thanks they get in return.
I mean, all those videos and photos of soldiers riding around on children’s bikes taken from houses they were going to destroy, or parading about wearing women’s underwear they had taken from the houses of people they had evicted. But no, it’s the insult to Jesus that is so bad 🤷🏼♂️
Update on the most moral army in the world. Al Jazeera Breaking News @AJENews A photo of an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has sparked widespread condemnation. Israeli officials confirmed the image is genuine and 'promised to investigate!
This one seems to have caused panic, and it’s pretty bleak that a picture of a guy smashing a statue of a dude who died two thousand years ago is more internationally disastrous than hundreds of hours of video of civilians being bombed, burned, machine gunned, sniped, evicted and starved.
This week I'm supporting Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week. MS is unpredictable and affects everyone differently.
The theme is challenging MS assumptions and the impact these misconceptions can have.
Living with MS is tough. No two days are the same, and many symptoms are invisible.
