When the 50-megaton Tsar Bomba was detonated in 1961, Britain was told there was little to fear. But secret files show fallout reached our shores, and Downing Street hushed it up.

They gave Madelson the ambassador role *because* he was a wrong'un. We all knew it then and all know it now.

Vetting which would have shown in which ways he was a wrong'un was never a priority.

Had it been, PM might have tumbled to fact Mandelson was *too much* of a wrong'un.

'You're not being told why Keir Starmer doesn't need to resign, but probably should' It must be a coincidence civil servants have created a national security scandal for the PM at the time he is trying to make it a crime for civil servants to use national security as a reason to lie

The PM may well survive but the best outcome for him is a man governed by events and a country governed by the unelected.

“The real problem is that 10 years of post-Brexit chaos has created a civil service that has been running the country for a decade and has become more tyrannical than even Sir Humphry Appleby would consider usual.”

One more ride I would like to do all of this again, please

Tomorrow I will be reading this as the eulogy at my father’s funeral: one of the hardest things I will ever have to do, but I’m determined not to let him down.

I don’t want tomorrow to happen, but I know it must. I love you Dad.

Editors like political reporters because they have impressive contacts and low mileage claims. Whitehall sources like them too, because like all journos they want to believe.

Today Keir Starmer finally likes them as well:

'Kanye West isn't the problem. It's why they booked him in the first place' The only way to make a dent in the social media age is to stoke the outrage skipfire that provokes us into caring about things we were long ago bored of

Who wants to see their former idol in a state of such moral and financial desperation that he’s begging for the chance to rap to middle-aged Tesla drivers?

EXCLUSIVE: Ministry of Defence lawyers knew of a whistleblowing report that said British troops were exposed to radiation, but failed to tell judges.

A minister wept as she made the admission to Parliament.

BBC R4’s PM programme will be speaking to Rebecca Long-Bailey at 545pm about the extraordinary debate about nuclear veterans where she discussed my report on a cover-up of fallout exposure of British troops, and the minister wept at the Despatch Box.

I know people expect incisive, scathing and slightly-sweary political commentary from me. I’m not up to that just at the moment, so I wrote this instead.

Keir Starmer's legal legacy is being put at risk by three of his own Cabinet ministers, say insiders The Prime Minister made one 'full-fat' promise before he was elected. His failure to take control of Hillsborough Law means he is at risk of betraying victims of official cover-ups

A fundamental failure to understand the problem with the FOI system isn't too many requests - it's too many refusals. Switch it so everything is automatically public unless exempt, and workload drops while trust rises.

Fools.

The last days of Billy Morris, and the beginning of a 70 year government cover-up For decades the UK insisted servicemen at nuclear weapons tests were unharmed. Now, as police confirm they are considering fresh evidence, a whistleblowing report finally reveals the horrific truth

I chose the name for this Substack expecting it to be about stories that couldn’t find a home with an editor.

Turns out, it’s about rescuing the truth from the government shredder.

This is a bloody scandal - to add to the scandals over tainted blood , and the Post Office compensation delays. You’d think governments who take over from previous administrations would be keen to right wrongs, but it seems they cannot bring themselves to do that - civil servants maybe the problem?

With thanks to Billy's niece Vanessa Evans we can now tell his story in full - and it's horrifying.

(It's also a bit of a moment when you read a top secret document that has your byline in it).

In 2014, two Atomic Weapons Establishment staff blew the whistle on a cover-up about troops who were exposed to radiation, & lied to.

Their report detailed the story of Billy Morris, a 20yr old sapper sent to Christmas Island, and an article I'd written about him

If you want a definitive sign that British society is sliding into the abyss, I present you with a workplace coffee shop in which every single Yorkie bar on sale had been snapped inside the packet.

It’s not even a handcart any more. We’re on RIMS.
