Probably worth mentioning this book again as Minneapolis figures out whether weβre going to have a cop city struggle of our own.

Words by Tortuguita: theyβll succeed at hurting some people, theyβll succeed at destroying some infrastructure, but theyβre not going to succeed at stopping the Movement. Watercolor: tree, reddish sun, broken horizontal and vertical bands of green and blue. Leaves falling & rising.

Art of Tortuguita amidst plants, a sunrise, and forest. Texts says TORT 1996-2023. "The abolitionist mission isn't done until every prison is empty. When there are no more cops, when the land has been given back, that's when it's over. I don't expect to live to see that day, necessarily. I mean, I hope so. But I smoke."
Three years ago today, Georgia state police murdered Tortuguita as part of their drive to destroy the Weelaunee Forest and build a deadly police militarization center.
Tort fought for a world without police and capitalism, and so should we. Viva, viva Tortuguita.

It's bleak out there. But we're gonna do some good this week.
How I'd Fix Atlanta has partnered with Undue Medical Debt to help a bunch of ATLiens this week, and we need your help.

The crackdown on any protest continues: 4 arrested on charges of "suspicion of malicious communications" for projecting images of Tr*mp & Epstein on the wall of Windsor Castle.
β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ excited and hopeful!!!
and follow his account on bluesky at @rohitforatlanta.bsky.social :)
if you know me, you know i am SO READY to vote for @rohitforatlanta.bsky.social
but! you don't have to take my word for it.

You can donate to Rohit here: secure.actblue.com/donate/rohit...
and maybe even more importantly, you can sign up to knock doors and phone bank for him here: rohitforatlanta.com/volunteer/
Overstreet has also made xenophobic comments against Rohit, incl. at a forum last week where she said we don't need someone who will "blow up" city hall. Just yesterday, someone just sent an anonymous email to thousands calling him "dangerous" and a "threat to public safety" with "extreme policies"
Finally, importantly, heβs not part of the establishment! Overstreet is Andre Dickensβ endorsed candidate who has long been pro cop, anti closure of the jail, who has targeted the pre-arrest diversion program, and has generally been awful to advocates.
Fourth, Rohit was VERY vocal about the cityβs completely anti-democratic shut down of the cop city referendum and fought hard against alllll of the voter suppression that was happening. I want a fighter like him. On the other hand, Overstreet gladly endorsed voter suppression.
Third, check out his platform! Well thought out and intentional about meeting Atlanta community membersβ needs. I believe he will be accountable to a broad swath of Atlantans that have long been neglected and ignored. rohitforatlanta.com/policy-platf...
Second, he has an amazing vision for the council president role. Itβs traditionally thought of as just a ceremonial role, and our city council has been QUITE deferential to the mayor. But Rohit speaks of the president as a true check on the executive β a role I want to see!!
First, Rohit brings an amazing combination of wonky knowledge (has been doing local political work for a LONG time, including with the Center for Civic Innovation) and deep passion for a better, more equal Atlanta. Highly qualified and understands the city code better than most.
Atlanta! A big city race is happening: Rohit Malhotra is running for City Council President against the pro-Cop City candidate Marci Overstreet.
Rohit has been facing racist attacks & bad faith, and needs our support. Thread w/ my pitch for you to support him: rohitforatlanta.com

Cop City RICO motions hearings day 3 live thread:
Good news! A judge has thrown out most of the Cop City RICO indictment! Georgiaβs AG lacked authority to bring Counts 1 & 3, accounting for most of the defendants. The state will appeal & a subset of defendants still face terrorism charges, but this win is something to celebrate.
Judgeβs dismissal pending for (at least) 56 of 61 ppl from the indictment in the Cop City RICO case due to yet another prosecutorial error. This time, itβs an issue of jurisdiction and how the DA brought the case. Expect appeals, ofc.
Meanwhile, 61 peopleβs lives still remain in legal limbo hell.
Tweet from @ATLSolFund: The Cop City RICO is in crisis. Judge Farmer plans to throw out the bulk of the case on the reasoning that the Georgia Attorney General's office was not invited by the Fulton DA (Fani Willis) to bring the case, so it lacks constitutional authority to prosecute.
Tweet from @ATLSolFund: This is not the end of the RICO case, but it's a reminder that the State's campaign of repression is destined to fail. What happens next will decide whether the AG simply returns to the drawing board for the next round of attacks, or is finally held accountable for their abuses.

This case has *always* been weak in EVERY way: technically AND substantively. There's no evidence. There's no procedure. Due process violations left and right. Discovery failures. A complete and total unmitigated disaster of a case, and today reiterates that.
As always, you can support the legal defense and the living/travel expenses of those facing this political prosecution here: weelauneethefree.org/support-the-...
None of this changes the entire point of the indictment: to ruin 61 people's lives over their opposition to Cop City, and to intimidate countless others from opposing the state. In that regard, they have already done untold harm to the defendants' lives.
Importantly, the dismissal comes on a relatively technical issue: that the Attorney General did not have the jurisdiction nor did he take the required steps to bring this case. This is NOT a substantive ruling, and like I said, it will be appealed.
But a huge deal nonetheless.
enormous development in the Cop City RICO case today: the Judge indicated he would be dismissing *at least* the RICO and Arson counts of the indictment, which would eliminate 56 out of 61 people from the indictment.
Official answer tomorrow, and it will certainly be appealed.
