This is an image of Messier 74, also known as NGC 628 and the Phantom Galaxy. It is a large spiral galaxy in Pisces and is about 32 million light years away from Earth. The Galaxy contains two clearly defined spiral arms and is there for used as an archetypal example of a grand design spiral galaxy. The galaxies low surface brightness makes it the most difficult Messier object for amateur astronomers to observe. It's relatively large angular or apparent size and the Galaxy's face on orientation make it an ideal object for professional astronomers who want to study spiral arm structure and spiral density waves. It is estimated that m474 hosts about 100 billion stars. In the upper right corner is the Supernova SN2013e.
This beauty is M74/NGC628, the Phantom Galaxy, which lies roughly 35 million light years away from us. Taken Friday night with my Celestron C11, f/6.3 reducer, CGEM II mount, StarSense AutoGuider, ZWO ASI2600MC Pro camera, and L-Pro light pollution filter. #astrophotography
