Repton 3 was easy enough. It was just one level at a time, similar to the first one but with more features and a level creator. Repton 2 was the tough one. One long game with a restart necessary for any mistakes. I used a replay tape-to-disk device that saved memory state to complete that one.

We have computers on our planet, and software written for a Vortex 5000 will not run on a Bambleweeny brain. It is the same on Earth where software for a ZX Specturm will not run on a BBC Micro. As punishment for your error we will maroon you on earth by destroying your ship.

He booted up the disk and watched my program run its course.
A small space craft with the initials "JP" sat in the corner of the screen. A UFO scrolled down from the top and an alien with long antennae appeared next to it.

I agreed, took the cassette and floppy disk home and got to work.
On the last day of my final year at high school I delivered the cassette, floppy disk and got him to sign my leavers sheet. I claimed I did not have time to demonstrate there and then and made my excuses.

Some of the other more nerdy pupils had already said it could not run on a BBC but he was insistent on trying. He knew I had a BBC with floppy disk drive, so asked if I could transfer the ZX spectrum software on cassette to a floppy disk that would run on a BBC Micro.

One day he approached me to ask a favour. The science department had a BBC Micro computer and he wanted to try out some science software that he had acquired. It was on cassette and stated that it was for the ZX Spectrum.

Mr. Phillips was an odd man. If I were being kind I would say 'eccentric'. Certainly his teaching method was far less engaging than the physics teacher at the school I was at previously. He delighted in claiming to be an alien, a Sartorian if I remember correctly.

Origin stories appear to be a thing today, and @2-wheeled-wolf.bsky.social reminded me of our old Physics teacher. So I thought I'd share my story of him.
