But these gases are only biosignatures if we can infer their rates of production and destruction. We must deduce the workings of the underlying engine: a planet’s geochemical cycles.

TREC is a project within the NExSS RCN devoted to detailing the connection between a planet's natural geological cycles and its atmospheric signature. Flagship space telescopes are poised to discover gases like O2 and CH4 in the atmospheres of rocky exoplanets.

We expect to offer ~40 people in person attendance, which will include stipends to offset attendance costs. We expect to notify selected in person applicants in late October; all others will be offered virtual attendance.

This workshop will bring together astronomers & geochemists to map out potential geochemical cycles & their effects on biosignatures, across the diversity of rocky exoplanets. We seek participants across career stages, and across many fields: astronomy, planetary science, & especially geochemistry.

The Tracing Rocky Exoplanet Compositions (TREC) workshop "Under the Atmospheric Hood: How Geochemical Cycles Affect Exoplanet Biosignatures" will be held at ASU in Tempe, AZ Jan. 12–14 (after the AAS meeting in Phoenix).
