Opposition to the Shah grows as Islamists and secular leftists align, merging clerical grassroots mobilization with student activism, spreading revolutionary sentiment and transforming public spaces like Tehran University by 1977–78.
Many date the Iranian Revolution to 78, but Islamist historians trace it to 63 when Khomeini rebelled. Though the Shah crushed the uprising, Khomeini’s movement went underground, built influence & set the stage for his fall.
