48k spectrum game: wizard in a red forest with yellow onscreen scroll
Last night I played Dragontorc of Avalon on the Spectrum 48k for the first time in 40 years and the moment that endless tinny music kicked in I was transported to being an irritated 11 year old. #retrogaming

Had enormous fun with That Bloody Quiz Show at Horror on Sea, with wonderful team captains Cy Henty and @mychoeg.bsky.social Photo by the great @gazdevere.bsky.social

Enshittification by Cory Doctorow is the best and most depressing book I've read in the last year.
Many thanks - glad you enjoyed it!
I just saw a thread of Blockbuster nostalgia and anecdotes from behind the tills. I wrote a blog entry about my own experiences many, many years ago. I dug it up to refresh my memory (link in next post)

I had it on the C64 and, weirdly, I rather liked it. But then I really dug ET on the Atari 2600 so maybe I'm not the best judge.

As well as watching horror films I am passionate about supporting independent creatives in the genre. One such person is @mychoeg.bsky.social who has created a whole universe for their films to exist in. Lovely chap as well!

to live in a world where the Butterfly Baby ending was a financially viable way to conclude a horror movie, and where people would embrace it as strange and mournful and hopeful. I like weird bits in movies. I like the Butterfly Baby. (3/3)
As a teenager, I was vaguely interested in it (having seen photos in CINEFEX long before DVDs/YouTube on which to watch deleted scenes) but didn't think much about it. This morning I woke up struck by what an incredibly sad and beautiful note it would have been to end the movie on. I'd like (2/3)
Stylised butterfly-winged baby on a branch
Butterfly baby flying towards light source in dark space
When I talk about deleted scenes from The Fly (1986), I usually talk about the Monkey Cat. Today, I've woken up obsessing about the Butterfly Baby ending. If you've never seen it, its a dream sequence in which Veronica dreams of a butterfly baby that hatches and flies towards a distant light...
DESCENDING THE STAIRS is my storytelling game of nightlife and nostalgia published in 2021.
The inspiration for this game was the same as for the two novels I birthed in 2008-9 and have been revising and querying ever since - THE LOVELY LONG AGO and LOST ALONG THE WAY.

Really looking forward to this!
I still treasure that Creature From the Black Lagoon. Just a terrific figure.
Let's raise a glass to the ones we love, including the ones that are no longer here to raise one back. There's love and then there's everything else, and everything else really doesn't matter much.

My usual sign-off from social media for the holiday season, albeit after a year where I've barely been on social media anyway. Hope you're all doing well, and that you get to spend the holidays with a full belly, good company and a roof over your head.

MASSIVE recommend for Matinee to Midnight podcast. For anyone who loves cinema, there's genuine appreciation of the classics and some obscure recommendations. Well informed and full of genuine enthusiasm rather than the snark I hear in so many cult movie pods. matineetomidnight.podbean.com
Can't wait for Saturday January 17th at the mighty Horror-on-Sea Film Festival... I'll be presenting THAT BLOODY QUIZ SHOW and it should be great fun... #horror
So the 'abridged' version of It's a Wonderful Life on Prime literally cuts from George meeting the angel Clarence and asking him if he's got $8000 to George cheering in the street happy, making it look like the angel lent him eight grand to conclude the plot.
Thanks so much Jeff!
