🌊The ocean already acts as a natural carbon sink, but could we enhance this ability to remove more CO₂ from the atmosphere?
Our new Climate Classroom dives into Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement: how it works, its potential, and the scientific questions around safety and deployment.

🌍Yesterday, we brought the RESCUE Climate Challenge to a school in Barcelona!
With students 14–15 years old, we talked about climate change and the role carbon dioxide removal (CDR) can play.

🌊The ocean can absorb and store part of the CO₂ we emit, acting as a natural carbon sink.
❓Could we help the ocean absorb more CO₂?
❓How is it deployed, and what do scientists study to ensure it’s safe and effective?
👉 This Climate Classroom explores this approach. Take a look! buff.ly/kDXk8ak

What our multimodel analysis has shown:
🌴In tropical regions, planting trees tends to cool the climate;
❄️In high-latitude areas, new forests can darken snowy surfaces & cause local warming, despite their CO₂ removal potential
Tree planting isn’t a simple, one-size-fits-all fix overall!

🌊 The ocean has the potential to absorb and store part of the excess carbon dioxide emitted. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) is a promising carbon dioxide removal approach currently explored.
But how does it work and what are its challenges?

❓ Can CDR reverse agroecological drought due to atmospheric CO2 emissions?
A new RESCUE-funded study highlights that drought increases in hotspot regions cannot be symmetrically reversed by CDR, and the need for long-term drought adaptation planning.
