There's a really impressive front between Boston and Worcester right now - a 17 degree swing (from 64 in Somerville to 81 in Worcester) on the drive home.

It seems quite stationary at the moment...

I have no idea if this family has any recourse against Target (or any recourse besides that which would result in an expensive moral victory), but I imagine @kenwhite.bsky.social might have some thoughts.

An Iranian colleague was a lead author on my chapter of the @ipbes.net Transformative Change Assessment. Finally heard from him yesterday (thank God).

The crux of his message: everything is terrible, what the hell? But since we’re here, how can I help move these key pubs forward?

Badass.

I’m struck by the smiles from military staff in these pics. They have a hard job I wish wasn’t needed - and which the administration has clearly abused in recent weeks. These are the smiles of people who know they just participated in a good thing…

Sure, this is probably Trump saying Trump Things™️, but 1) there needs to be concerted pushback on insane statements and 2) on the small chance this is what he actually thinks he can and should do, the people around him need to know we are all watching and will hold them accountable for the outcome.

I generally try to ignore the Trump Show, since he says outrageous things to drive attention to what he wants and forces everyone to react to him, but:

Threatening to obliterate a civilization is absolutely threatening to commit genocide. This cannot happen in my name or in anyone's name...

Tom resumed his whitewashing, and answered carelessly:

"Well, maybe it is, and maybe it ain't. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer."

"Oh come, now, you don't mean to let on that you LIKE it?"

The brush continued to move.

"Like it? Well, I don't see why I oughtn't to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?"

That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped nibbling his apple. Tom swept his brush daintily back and forth—stepped back to note the effect—added a touch here and there—criticised the effect again—Ben watching every move and getting more and more interested, more and more absorbed. Presently he said:

"Say, Tom, let ME whitewash a little."

Tom considered, was about to consent; but he altered his mind:

"No—no—I reckon it wouldn't hardly do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly's awful particular about this fence—right here on the street, you know—but if it was the back fence I wouldn't mind and SHE wouldn't. Yes, she's awful particular about this fence; it's got to be done very careful; I reckon there ain't one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it's got to be done."

OK, fine, if you did not, the relevant passage...

Rant from Trump trying to convince other countries to help him reopen the Strait of Hormuz by saying the job is already done and they should get their own oil.

Ref-ing aside, if another Kentucky player picks up their dribble into a double team and turns it over, I will scream.

Seriously, every single possession is ending in a whistle.

This game will take hours and will end with the managers from both teams on the floor

Oh, come ON UNC. I hate UNC, so it figures they’d do this to me.

Mildly annoyed with St Mary’s but I don’t know enough about them to take it personally

Man, this is already going badly. That Wisconsin L is going to hurt me for a few rounds.

Sad Louisville survived.

Mildly annoyed with Ohio State.

Cheering like hell for a Kentucky-Virginia "Ed's Alma Maters" matchup in the second weekend. This first requires Kentucky not falling down on the banana peel that is Santa Clara - tomorrow will be stressful.

Today: let's go Texas, bounce BYU. And S Florida beat Louisville.

My brackets tend to "sneaky collapse": things seem to be going fine and I relax, only to suddenly realize I've had 2-3 key losses at the end of the first day. I don't melt down totally, nor do I usually crush it.

In short, it's a pretty "meh" experience.

Here come the best two days in sports every year - 25 minutes from the start of the NCAA Tournament first round.

COMMENCE THE CHAOS

(if you hate sports, I suggest muting me until Saturday. I have no idea how much I will post, but it will largely be about basketball and my collapsing bracket)

The budget of USAID was $22 billion per year.

It was *saving the lives* of 4.1 million men, women, and children per year, all over the world.

NYTimes subhead says “Venezuela gave Trump a taste of success”

Dear @nytimes.com, you might want to clarify your definitions of “regime change” and “success” before running a headline like this.

What exactly about the regime has changed, and how can that be measured against goals that were never really articulated?

Former dean take: this is disqualifying for anyone who wants a university-wide research leadership position. Just totally wrong. Perhaps some fields want/demand this, but imposing it on all fields is destructive.

Central Region! Elmina! Go there from Cape - just a 10 minute drive. If you can go to a beach, go to Brenu Achim!

I will be there in 2 weeks!

Look, Miller is terrible and needs to face consequences. But let’s not elevate him to “architect.”

Maybe “toddler placing with racist Lincoln Logs.” Which would still make him the brightest bulb on that very dim tree.
