Will the combination of business leaders being afraid of their customers AND politicians being afraid of their own voting base be enough to create systemic change?
As we witness billionaire oligarchs seizing power and the wealthiest proposed administration in history being formed, perhaps more conservatives will realize that the culture and race wars they have embraced were a stalking horse for something more sinister.
Perhaps, the cracks in the conservative facade will spread. A whole host of policies from ‘trickle down economics’ to bankruptcy reform have persistently screwed the bulk of their own constituents and maybe that realisation is growing.
But with the sorts of salaries they collect, danger is not likely much of a disincentive. Think of firefighters...people put their lives on the line everyday for far less money. The risk/reward ratio at play here is so out of whack with normal lives that is hard to even comprehend.
It is hard to say if anything good will come of this. Instead of pledging reform, business leaders have responded by removing their profiles from company websites and hiring more security. This does mean they are afraid, which is objectively good.
These guys make more in one year than most people will make in multiple lifetimes, with bonuses based on how much they squeeze and deny their own customers.
