We’ve been talking in our lab meetings about sexual conflict and sexual dimorphism, and have some thoughts. What if animal genomes are far more sex-specific and less cosntrained than we assume? @linley-sherin.bsky.social pulled it all together here www.zoology.ubc.ca/mank-lab/pdf... 1/n

I believe last 2 years were 03/27 and 04/01 (so earlier than in the past). Our research councillor expects early next week, but I'm still crossing fingers for today.

Is the goal to eventually extract DNA from them? If so, and if it’s a possibility, I’d suggest shipping DNA. Else I am not of much help 😅

We love to fetishize "top" researchers and give them special big pots of money. But we get far more science by spreading money among all researchers (closer to the NSERC DG model). This old post is magically relevant again... scientistseessquirrel.wordpress.com/2015/05/12/w...

Are these unsolicited/non-consented AI review of biorxiv posted papers really a thing? 🙄

Rapid compensatory evolution within a multiprotein complex preserves telomere integrity Intragenomic conflict with selfish genetic elements spurs adaptive changes in subunits of essential multiprotein complexes. Whether and how these adaptive changes disrupt interactions within such comp...

How to keep in step when your (protein) partner speeds up…

Here we investigated the adaptive remodeling of a protein-protein interaction surface essential for telomere protection.

Sex-specific modifications of gametogenesis in natural and lab-bred Fundulus spp. hybrids Successful hybridization between species can be limited by a variety of reproductive barriers; the emergence of asexual lineages is an example of a strong post zygotic barrier that is relatively rare ...

In this latest piece, part of a trans-Atlantic enriching collaboration, we investigate sex-specific differences in gametogenesis in fish hybrids underlying clonal reproduction: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

You should be able to find that in the mutation section on OMIM

#CancerGenetics people: I am looking for examples of tumor suppressor genes that are inactivated in cancers by regulatory mutations (non-coding) rather than coding mutations. Please share.

Great initiative! It may be too late, but I feel it would have been nice to include someone from a small institution, including primarily undergraduate institution, as the landscape and overall experience may differ significantly from U15 and comparable institutions.

A while back (maybe 3-4 years?) there was a paper on common misconceptions of the genetics of various traits. One of them was eye colour in humans. I have lost this reference and can't find it anywhere. Does anyone recognise what I mean?

Massive investment in science in the upcoming Canadian budget would send a strong message that rationality and reason should lead the world, not charlatanism. People will return to science-based policies and health measures, and countries that have not given up will have a strong economic lead!

We still use usats for small numbers of fishies 🐠 I admit they don’t scale up very well but are excellent training for undergrads 🤓
Depending on the species, there might be decent SNP-based panels out there (KASP style) 😊

Peer review ✍️, when done properly, remains an excellent mean to improve manuscripts ✔️. Special thanks to two anonymous reviewers that helped us put together this new version!
