Not saying it was all on him, but he sure didn’t leave us in a position for success.

The CEO of Canada Post used to be the CEO of Scotsburn Ice Cream when I worked there. His reign ended and we survived maybe a year or two before we had to sell it all off. A 110+ year company died a whimpering, poor death.

While I can appreciate you wanting to further reach on a worthy cause, piggybacking off my education thread really doesn’t make any sense. Try following and shooting me a private message in the future.

White man goes to the Supreme Court over being told “no”.

I’m just amazed at the tripwires, circular logic and brazenness at every turn in dealing with the education department. Definitely consider myself an ally of educators and support staff. But the system and bureaucracy is incredible.

And that culminated with my privacy misuse complaint that unsurprisingly went nowhere.

I have so many good stories from the past few years on this stuff. My favourite would be the previous Deputy Minister of Education creeping my LinkedIn profile because of another FOIPOP. That’s a whole other story.

They know full well an investigation will take years. People let up and move on.

I closed my complaint to make way for others.

We need to keep pushing for strengthening the OIPC & OAG. They’re two entities in government that truly matter for openness and transparency. #nspoli #NovaScotia

This is public data. Thankfully the Office of the Auditor General requested similar data for their analysis. The only difference is that when a citizen asking for it, the Department of Education can say they don’t have the time to extract a particular dataset from a database.

At that point I escalated to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. As someone with 25 years in technology, I know systems. At worst, building that query would take an hour. In reality…a couple minutes.

The Office of the Auditor General actually published exactly what I was looking for in their report on school violence in the summer of 2024.

But in 2022, my request was denied under FOIPOP Act s. 8(3). Basically, it would take far too much effort to compile.

I was looking for summary data for maybe five years, grouped by each “unacceptable behaviour” defined by the department. Bullying can be violent. Sexual assault is definitely violent. So it’s important to have full context, other than the blanket “physical violence” the media reports on.

A FOIPOP request that I contested about the Nova Scotia Department of Education’s refusal to provide specific summary data about school violence back in 2022 was finally addressed by the Office of the Information Privacy Commissioner today. I closed it immediately. 🧵 1/?

I swore I wouldn’t use BlueSky to talk about work stuff, but this is dead accurate. Security does NOT mean privacy and vice versa. A high chain link fence may be secure to some degree, but it’s not private.

You’re welcome. Check out Butcher’s Union. Excellent food. Nice spot. Call ahead for a table.

You can walk around anywhere in Grand Rapids and not feel unsafe. Great little city. Downtown is excellent.

I go to Grand Rapids, Michigan a few times a year. It’s very safe. Every city has places you just steer clear from. Walking around parts of Hollywood at 11 PM…wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve visited most of the US and haven’t really felt too unsafe. Someone pulled a gun on me in Florida once. That’s it.

It appeared at the time she downplayed the severity of the situation until the OAG report came out. Perhaps the secrecy is so baked into that department that she was only speaking of the info that was presented to her. I’d like to think that. She appears to be one of the few ethical MLAs we have.

I may have been partially wrong about Becky Druhan. 4 years ago, her Department of Education did very little on the school violence front. I’m starting to think that the secrecy and evasiveness from the department was theirs alone, and MLA Druhan was likely largely in the dark.

The Nova Scotia government streamlined itself down to its most efficiently dangerous form: full blown autocracy.

Everything about this is outrageous. The NS Minister of Ed refuses to properly fund public schools. This isn't just about HRM.

"But when asked if the province would commit to new funding to cover any possible gaps for librarians left by Halifax funding changes, Maguire [didn't] answer the question"

This ridiculous budget passed while barring the public from a public building. #nspoli

I think so. But the leadership debate was a train wreck. People want the second coming of Jack Layton and that isn’t readily available.

😡

Write your MLAs and tell them to vote “no” on this budget.
