Microsoft Publisher 95/98: I spent hours making websites on MS Publisher. I loved creating the page structure and populating it with pictures and text. There were pages about me, my family, my house and my pets. I never put it online.

Oh yeah, totally not another read through for structural issues at copy edit - yes! That would be brutal. Just a read through for typos, continuity etc as there's always something!

Ooh this is interesting! So at what stages DO you do a full readthrough? I didn't do one after my copy edits, but I DID do one after my proofread, and I'm glad I did because I caught quite a bit.

We all know about the em-dash. What other 'tells' have you spotted that heavily suggest something has been written by AI?

I'll start:

"Not X. Not Y. Just Z."

A boy disappeared. Three years later, he came back. But he wasn’t who he said he was.

In 1994, 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay vanished from his Texas neighbourhood. No witnesses. No answers.

I understand the pressures on the BBC, but Radio 4's coverage of the Minneapolis shooting is an example of "bad balance".

It's all "the Trump regime says she was a terrorist, but Democrats say it was murder".

The BBC has the footage. It doesn't have to treat truth and falsehood as equally valid.

But things didn’t add up. His accent was wrong. His eye colour had changed. He didn’t recognise people he should.

Because he wasn’t Nicholas Barclay. He was Frédéric Bourdin. A 23-year-old French con artist. And this wasn’t his first impersonation.

So why did the family accept him? Were they fooled… or did they need him to be real?

The truth eventually came out. But the real mystery remains: How far will people go to protect the story they want to believe?

My regular reminder that when a company says they don't have a budget, they mean they don't have a budget FOR YOU.

They most certainly will be paying for other people and services.

🚨Calling all writers !🚨
Writing is hard and lonely and scary! And though there are lots of great editorial services something that’s missing is the ability just to chat things through with someone. Plotting issues, publishing advice, how to start writing a book 1/2

It's publication day for #TheWomanNextDoor & the amazing @janicehallett.bsky.social said 'dark, menacing and beautifully written, with a strong background in the psychology of behaviour, this is an evocative tale of childhood bullying and its consequences.' I'm blown away! @emblabooks.bsky.social

Somehow I've managed to arrange my life so that my car insurance, home insurance and road tax all need to be arranged and paid at the same time. It's an admin nightmare but at least it all gets done at once, I suppose?
