Can anyone assist Rachele with this awful situation? Seems very poor from UCU.
I’m appalled by this - so sorry 🙃
Who wants to put together a special issue on Severance so I have a place to pitch a thing in a few months?
There's an edited vol. already, but it's not of stunning calibre, so there is room, I think.
There are now 92 universities in the UK actively making redundancies. That will be 100 by the end of the academic year. The rout is as stupid as it is wasteful.

We’re taking strike action at UEA next Wednesday, like many other UCU colleagues across the UK facing similar threats of redundancy. Please give our UCU account a follow & support our strike action next week 🌹💪
It’s an obscure policy detail for anyone outside of academia but deeply unsettling for UK arts and humanities scholars at a time their jobs are increasingly under threat: www.timeshighereducation.com/news/ref-ref...

"I am old enough to remember when it was important for a university to just have a history department and somewhere to study literature, and I’m not that old."
This is a plum job for someone: Prof and Head of English @sheffielduni.bsky.social Particularly good for someone with knowledge across linguistics and literature, I reckon

The Arts and Humanities Alliance have written an open letter to Bridget Philippson, Secretary of State for Education, on the recently announced cuts across the sector. We are concerned that these measures disproportionately affect our disciplines and call for an urgent government review.

Sobering, and important. Hannah Yelin (Ox Brookes): 'Her latest paper, published in the journal New Formations, found that 74 per cent of academics had experienced online harms as a result of sharing research publicly – affecting their careers and causing significant physical and mental harms.' 1/3
You may wish to share this story, which indicates potential issues with the way the some post-92 universities are dealing with the financial challenges facing the sector. You may also wish to read up on the ramifications of allowing universities to own subsidiary companies. tinyurl.com/8bbh95kf
Every time you share a "The Conversation" post I want to remind you that they have a multi-million dollar annual budget and pay writers zero dollars, including adjuncts and grad students. We cannot rely on exploited labor to achieve a better public humanities.
