This is very much a "you pay for freedom in time/money/convenience" trade-off that you get with open source software. Personally, knowing my database can't be enshittified by future software updates by the author is worth the slight headache of figuring out how I was gonna back up my shit

I'm using obsidian right now, backing up obsidian databases can be as easy as "throw it in 'version control of your choice'" or complex as using a cloud provider designed to work with self hosted cloud...
Backups cost money, usually require non-free services, so they make it modular for that reason
