Meridionally consistent decline in the observed western boundary contribution to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Western boundary observations in the Atlantic suggest a meridionally consistent decline in the ocean overturning circulation.

New study finds the "canary in the coal mine" for the #AMOC: a consistent decline of the western overturning circulation, down from 20 to 15 Sv during 2004-2023 at 26° N. 🌊
AMOC "could be at or near a critical tipping point, potentially leading to its collapse".

Crystal-facet-directed all-vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells - Nature Materials The vacuum process is scalable and solvent free, yet all-vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells still trail solution-processed counterparts. Facet-directed co-evaporation yields (100)-oriented mixed-...

We published a new study about some more stable perovskite/silicon tandems in Nature Materials. Xinyi started using PbCl2 for co-evaporated films that allowed him to get orientated films. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Was macht die Politik?

There is a worrisome new law on the way for researchers in the US. See the screenshot from the science article. It would have devastating consequences for perovskite solar cells researchers in the US. I am feeling really sorry for my colleagues

Dr. T-Rex presented yesterday their latest perovskite solar cell research. They are struggling a bit with reaching the chemicals in the glovebox but otherwise things are going smoothly

“The solar coating can be applied with any paint color and does not use silicon or rare earth materials.” Does not sound like perovskites (“any paint color”) or III-V (“rare earth”) for me - maybe a dye-based but then the 20% efficiency doesnt make sense. So not sure 😅

A green solvent enables precursor phase engineering of stable formamidinium lead triiodide perovskite solar cells - Nature Communications The use of harmful solvents to fabricate stable devices hampers the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Here, the authors introduce a biorenewable solvent system and precursor-phase engineering to realize stable formamidinium lead triiodide-based solar cells.

Those perovskites are considerably more stable than any other perovskite.

Butylamine takes a H+ from methylammonium and forms a mixed 2D perovskite of BAMAPbI3 (the n is mixed). The 2D perovskite is then converted into a 3D perovskite with a conversion of FAI in butanol. One ends up with a phase pure FAPbI3 film.

Heard a lot of people talk about the stability of the perovskite layer at the nature conference. A first good step is leaving behind coordinating solvents like DMSO and instead use amines which end up as part of the final perovskite! Using butylamine as coordinating solvent together with MeTHF

New research from Queens University shows the critically endangered flapper skate continues its slide to extinction. The lead author, Patrick Collins, told me that it's not too late but decisive action is needed.

I have never heard an English speaker pronounce my first and last name right. But same goes for Germans at times - peak was when I got a swimming cap for Christmas from my coach which was spelled PhiLLippe.

Somehow a bit sad here for perovskites. On twitter I had the feeling there was still somewhat of a perovskite solar cells community. But I havent really seen many interesting posts here about it.
