More like specimens in a biology field guide? Maybe it is thanks to that handpainted aesthetic, blending artistry and naturalism in a way the anime didn't? I am not sure, but I really loved looking at the art int he booklets. It felt so wonderfully diff. from the anime.🤍 (6/6)

... it gave me a sense of unpredictability, from what you felt used to in the anime. Early designs felt less like pets (can't think of a better analogy) and more like wild creatures? (5/6)

...like real creatures you might encounter in the wild, esp. with their sharper angles, “menacing” eyes, and even uneven details (inaccurate colors in comparison to the anime and the ingame sprites; diverging body shapes etc.)... (4/6)

I specifically remember Sugimoris aesthetic in the games' booklets: soft watercolors, splotchy textures, and irregular line weights. In contrast to the anime’s flat, bright colors (loved the cel-shaded era), the original art in these bookles made Pokémon feel... different! (3/6)

...it’s a particular feeling, a unique polish that made the games feel darker, more mysterious, like urban exploration, compared to the bright, character-driven after-school world of the show? Ykwim? (2/6)

Do you guys also feel that there’s something distinctly different about Pokémon during the cartridge + booklet era (Blue, Silver, etc.) that set it apart from the anime? Not childhood nostalgia; it’s a feeling, a unique polish I can’t fully pin down… (1/6)
