This is also the single best model I can think of to avoid 5/6/7+ year development cycles too - let a team build internal tools, workflows, pipelines, let them iterate, and repeat. Hiring/firing cycles (on top of the human pain) cause us to rebuild the wheel over and over, and is really inefficient.

In Korea, when the president declared martial law after midnight and erected barricades in Seoul, congressional reps from all parties ran into the streets, yanked ak47s from the army at the barricades, broke down the locked door to Congress, repealed the martial law order, and arrested the president

Note that the workers who made Beast Breaker ARE getting rev-share on sales of the game on Steam, even though the studio shut down. Why? Because we had a union, and we negotiated for it.

Any business leader worth their salt would recognize the likely cost of such a battle and factor reduced growth. Not Tim, it seems! Line must go up, money printer goes brrrrrrr.

And so a bunch of extremely talented individuals get the axe, while Tim enjoys a net worth of (at least!!!) 7.6 billion.

The Epic layoffs are bewildering, unacceptable, but also unsurprising. Tim's desire to pursue costly legal battles against Apple and Google resulted in hundreds of millions in lost rev on mobile that is at least indirectly part of FN's slower growth and part of why 1k people lost their jobs today.

Multiple game studios have recently closed because their titles couldn't compete with established live-service games like Fortnite. Meanwhile, you can also literally work on Fortnite and get laid off and Tim Sweeney remains a billionaire.

Something has to change. The time is now.

I haven’t watched the video yet but wouldn’t masking require another buffer? Even if not full res and it’s upscaled, that’s an additional buffer that comes at some cost

The "developer control" is even worse than I thought. There are only three "controls":
1. Intensity, ie alpha blend between the original image and the yassified version
2. Color grading
3. Masking, to exclude elements from the effect altogether

That's it! Yassify or die, losers!

100%, there are dozens of layers of apathy and incompetence at the managerial level that can allow for billions of dollars to get flushed down the drain, because if there is no accountability and millions of dollars in personal gain on the line, there’s no benefit to actually make something succeed

Posted on LinkedIn last night, woke up to several hundred notifications, friends requests, etc. Seems I struck a nerve in the industry by saying I wanted to create my own projects and not be at the sway of execs.

I've said for a while it's going to have to be smaller studios and smaller projects.

Digging around, Reality Labs was 15k employees, so yeah - it’s very very possible when you pay people a ton of money and will let people spin wheels for a decade with no clear vision

Avg salary at Meta is around $400k, some roles over $1mil a year. Assume avg at 400k, 5k employees, over 10 years and you’re at 20 billion just on salary. Include hardware, software, R&D, IP deals…it’s certainly possible to spend that much and have nothing to show if you are structurally incompetent

Subnautica devs v. Krafton ruling is ABSOLUTELY stunning. Start at the top of page 32 and read until the end of that section on page 37.

Krafton CEO was warned by their legal personnel to not follow ChatGPT into what is likely Some Of The Dumbest Legal Shit Ever, CEO believed the plagiarism bot.

I love how tonally inconsistent Resident Evil 9 is. It doesn’t try to justify it. You just have to accept and love it for what it is.

AI-generated artwork is officially not eligible for copyright protection after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the appeal.

The court ruled that a work must have a human creator in order to qualify for copyright.

Meet The Unconventional Publishers Trying To Unfuck The Games Industry Developers turned publishers like Innersloth and Pocketpair are leveraging their success to help other indie games thrive.

Anyway all of this is endemic of the mode through which we monetize video game development. It's shifted to offloading risk from the wealthy publisher that can afford it (tencent) to the poorer developer that cannot (wildlight)
we don't have to make games like that

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

PSA for Discord's new age verification!

If you get hit by it and refuse to give them any ID or face scans as you should, here's a way to just... bypass it.

Go to Settings - Family Centre and then just enter a date of birth that's 18+

It's really that simple. Give them nothing.
