A large bunch of Careyโs Balsamroot and Bingens Lupine. Yellow and Purple flowers blooming against treeless hills and cloudy blue sky.
The Nuttallโs Larkspur is stunning this year. So many more patches/bloom stalks than last year.
Found a wee patch of Sagebrush Violet still in bloom. Purple flower with yellow centers in green grass and foliage
Back home for my favorite time of year in the shrub steppe. Peak bloom is exactly same week as last year. ๐ฑ๐ป
In the last 20 yrs NZ has become more like USA. (donโt miss the stodgy old tea rooms ๐) I donโt begrudge the average Kiwi with a bach renting it out to make $, and kiwis have long been entrepreneurs. But the capitalist vibe is real. Also, can someone please punch David Seymour in the face?
Itโs a crisis here in Sri Lanka. Fuel now 398 rupees/ltr = $5US/gal. (nowhere near US income levels to afford it.) Itโs been rationed for the last month, they are really worried about fertilizer. LPG (cooking fuel) is now really expensive (โฌ๏ธ a lot last week). Most Americans are not globally aware.
Posting from Sri Lanka - I can say weโve been watching that asshat obliterate the economy here the last three weeks. Every Sri Lankans weโve talked to says Trump is crazy, and that now the whole world knows heโs a liar. I wish MAGA nation would see it.
Two Indian elephants in Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka ๐ฑ๐ฐ
Rabbit. Rabbit.
Have fun today all you #NOKINGS commandos! Itโs evening here in Sri Lanka but Iโm looking forward to seeing all the coverage tomorrow. Everyone asks us why is Trump President again? So I canโt wait to show folks here how many Americans hate the ๐ ๐ฉ
Boing boing boing! ๐๐

Purple and white orchid growing on a tree.
I donโt know what type of orchid this is but it sure is beautiful.
Green stalks with light purple blossoms, with blue sky behind.
Milkweed Shrub inside Fort Galle.
Milkweed is recognizable everywhere. ๐ฑ๐ฉท
Here is Sri Lankaโs native Giant Milkweed, or Crown Flower, in Galle, Sri Lanka. Its stalks are about 7 ft.
Thatโs an unusual number of cooperative rufous bros. ๐
On April 11 and May 2, we're leading a two-part class at Tucson Botanical Gardens for folks interested in joining FotoFauna and learning how to set up a wildlife camera in their yard as part of our community science project. To learn more and register, visit: ow.ly/MCeR50YuPkt
Thatโs why @nytpitchbot.bsky.social is so good ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Comments are ๐ฅ too ๐คฃ
Most of the pine shavings in the nest box have been removed and scattered all over. ๐คฃ Does that mean they like it?
Despite the snow, spring is not far away. A pair of Sayโs Phoebes have arrived!! No telling if they will stick around or are just passing through, but Iโm happy to see them! We usually have a nesting pair every year. ๐ชถ ๐ชบ
Yours is a crow ๐ฆโโฌ They donโt gaf about bow ties. ๐
Working outside last weekend and had a Coopers in our old bird cherry tree. All the juncos had gone quiet but resident Annaโs did not gaf. Kept singing away on a very exposed branch as if daring the Coop to chase it ๐
Our driveway cleared of snow. The valley is covered with snow, at least for a couple more days.
Got more snow out of this storm than weโve had all winter! โ๏ธ An atmospheric river/warmup is on its way, I think the snow will be gone in a few days โ๏ธ
Wind was howling here in Central WA too. Now we have snow. What a week.
An adult and cub brown bear look in the direction of the camera while standing on the bank of a lake or river. Behind them are tree-covered mountains.
UPDATE: A court just dismissed a lawsuit pushing for old-growth logging in the #Tongass National Forest ๐ป๐ฒ๐
โThis ruling is a big victory. Iโm relieved the court squarely rejected the #logging industry's rash attempt to force large-scale logging,โ said Marlee Goska, our #Alaska attorney.
Came to say the same thing -> Central WA! ๐ค๐ดโโ๏ธ

Some days are rare & special. Yesterday, inland Puget Sound was home to 3 orcas who, before their Vancouver, BC multi-day stay last week, had only ever been documented once. (Anchorage). Welcome T419, T420 & T421!

Haha this is us too way out in the PNW. No thanks. Snow yesterday gone by last night 50 mph wind gusts and power out. Rain today snow tomorrow. Hello spring!
I grew up in AZ - we never had it, and never really needed it! Your state could do Standard Time w/o Congress! The one I really donโt like is Fall Back - the pets are wondering where their food is, and weโre plunged into darkness before 5. ๐
Oh Iโve never heard of this! Interesting ๐ค
I think it depends on what latitude you live. If we didnโt have the time change it would start getting light at 3:30, sunrise at 4:10am here in the PNW. No thanks! Our winter months are the Big Dark - we live for the long PDT summer evenings!! โ๏ธ
Ok I was gonna put a disclaimer about friggin house sparrows. Weโve had issues so I shoot them if the bluebirds are still trying to use the box or if theyโve given up and left I take the box down. HS have killed bluebirds and tree swallows to take the nest boxes.
