in the wake of that terrible absence though, disabled love has been and continues to be the most devoted and daring force I’ve known. It was chronically ill and disabled people who cared for me when I became sick and disabled; those with the least resources and capacity and time who gave the most.

I long for the community I thought would remain constant before I became sick and mourn the people who left my life when it was clear I was sick and would stay so. Sick friends and I talk about the threshold of inconvenience: when you are just sick one day too many for people to extend compassion.

getting sick and staying sick can be a great shock that reorders your place in the world to such an extent that it’s hard to explain to people who live outside the haze of sick time. falling through that door has meant arguing with language to communicate something we don’t have shared words for.

in general it feels like people are so resistant to anything inconveniencing their lives lately and there’s an insularity to that self sustenance that is not generative but grows brittle. but chronic illness is perpetual porosity, boundaries blurred by pain, fatigue, the interruptions of the body.

something about how living as a sick person means necessarily living through time outside of linearity, illness predicating stops and starts, yet being expected to (impossibly) subvert that lack of cohesion and then being faulted for not adhering to expectations of unimpeded time.

thinking always about how people often feel that my chronic illness inconveniences them yet they don’t understand or care how it inconveniences me and my life far more.

nope!! I've had too many ER trips for me to watch and not take psychic damage, alas...

I was very relieved to learn that's not what electrocution meant and also that I would live to see the morning.

as a very small child I once plugged in a lamp, saw sparks from the outlet when I did so, and to the best of my knowledge thought I had been electrocuted, so I went and laid down in my bed and very quietly waited to die.

I wish I could be cool and sexy and watch the pitt but unfortunately I have the killer combo of debilitating ocd and chronic illness so I would end each episode with an obliterating conviction that many of my daily symptoms and maladies were actually signs of impending death

I just re-found this painting, which was in a kid's bible I had growing up. I used to obssess over it, and I'm pretty sure seeing Lucifer here was the first time I thought a man was attractive? Over the years I'd think "it couldn't possibly be as horny as I remember it", but I mean come ON
