Radio M might be an "alternate" media reality, but it's intensely researched! 😇
Listen to the latest episode, an evening hour from April 1989:

WMHD Sundays, only on 97.7 Radio M HD2 Before there was Radio M, there was WMHD. Listen to classic WMHD broadcasts from 1983 to 1985 in their entirety, exactly as they first aired, all day every Sunday, on Classic 97 7 Radio M HD2. Today's broadcast: January 10, 1985 This broadcast begins at about 9 PM. Chris is in for a three-hour evening shift as "Terre Haute's most used substitute DJ," while he's also still doing The Electric Breakfast every weekday at 6 AM. And he got unusually ambitious with a multi-channel station promo and alternating left/right audio, all achieved through glorious physical analog tape editing. The music? Pure prototype Radio M goodness.
It's another WMHD Sunday: 100% *actual, real* original 1983-1985 recordings from Rose-Hulman's WMHD. Today's broadcast is from the evening of January 10, 1985. Then, explore what it became: 40+ years of the alternate media reality of Radio M.

After already (and unbelievably) hitting 100F this year, it was back into the 30s this morning ... brrr! But when I see a new freshly paved development beckoning, it's like catnip to my Wandrer heart.
Not only was this really published in Terre Haute, the full 8-hour countdown also aired, almost exactly as done here, on WKPL Platteville-Dubuque over four Sundays in December. This "media reality" is only barely "alternate"! 😆

The document is 100% actual, real, and true.
What happened after that is, of course, the stuff of the greatest eclectic adult-alternative radio station that Terre Haute *almost* got.

And here's a sneak preview of the first two "new vintage" hours: One from May 1986, and the other from April 1988.

WMHD is radio that doesn't play by the rules. by JOE LANE There's a station in the Terre Haute area that can be called free form in that the station broadcasts from new wave to jazz to Dr. Demento. You may not be able to receive WMHD's 160-watt signal, but it is there. WMHD, located at 90.5 FM is what can be described as the grandchild of the first radio station in Terre Haute, WRPI. WRPI was first broadcast from Rose Polytechnic Institute in the late 1920's and soon split off from the college to become WBOW. The college remained without a station until the 1960's when carrier current technology allowed a station to broadcast within the confines of a building's structure. To broadcast, the station was hooked up to building's wiring and to receive the signal, the listener plugged in his radio. This carrier current station was called WRTR and continued on until 1978 when a movement to create a real radio station, that could be heard out away from the college dorms, was begun. According to current WMHD general manager Jim Grey, the reason for this was the increasing number of dorms and the decrease in the ability of WRTR to service them. A three-year process was begun, and it culminated in the licensing of WMHD in 1981. Grey was quick to point out that the process was not easy, pointing to the fact that the license application itself was two inches thick. There was also a protest over the station's licensing by Indianapolis TV station WRTV, which indicated that WMHD's transmissions might interfere with its signal. But, as Grey commented, the signal of WMHD extends out only about 10 miles from the Rose-Hulman campus. The station's signal is of some interest, as it cannot be heard in the heart of downtown Terre Haute but is heard at Honey Creek Square. "As I understand it, Terre Haute is a valley and the signal goes over downtown. AM [radio] will bounce all over the place but FM won't," Grey added. During one attempt at finding out where the signal was and was not b…

I didn't expect S05 to be this much fun, and I didn't expect to make a completely plausible proof-of-concept for an actual (if, admittedly, niche) 2026 broadcast format. Think of it as the 20-hour 21st-century version of the original 1985 WSDM demo tape, 41 years in the making.

Today's broadcast: January 30, 1985 This broadcast begins at about 7 PM. It captures the moment where the Radio M music was pretty much in place, but still without most of the formatics that would be needed for commercial radio. For some reason, Chris also does a "news brief" that isn't all that brief, and he misreads a name in the copy, not once but twice. But it's still an interesting time capsule!
It's another WMHD Sunday, and we've got yet another *actual, real* 1985 broadcast from Rose-Hulman's WMHD, back when it was still 90.5 FM and before they sold the signal to ISU.

It's midnight at th-- er, at Radio M, and Zenith uses the freedom of the hour to get a little philosophical, a little melancholy, and even a bit playful as he digs waaaaay deep into the library. His little gong may or may not be ironic.

New today from The Guardian, their take on the "greatest" Cocteau Twins songs. My list of "glaring omissions" ("Quisqose"! The instrumental "Ribbed and Veined"!) probably differs from yours ... but hey, that's what music criticism is all about, yeah?

Here in real reality, just as I did for many years when the world was crashing down around us (but never like this), I made this hour of radio that speaks to Our Current Situation but also stands as a damn fine cup of coffee.

+1 for Denise Crosby's portrayal of Lara, though!
✅ Counterfactual alternate media reality.
✅ Long-duration fiction with an awesome soundtrack.
✅ The biggest coping mechanism ever created.

For those of us who lived through the era of The Day After and Threads (or, for that matter, the Cuban missile crisis), his new apocalyptic threat is triggering in the extreme. It's intense psychological abuse, just like he's done (and worse) to countless young girls, and that alone justifies _____.

This was before we had heard Album 88, and you can tell that our on-air style was a little looser and not quite as well structured as it became a couple months later after we drove to Atlanta to meet with them. But even here, the Radio M music philosophy was already pretty much in place. By the way, if you know the original source of the fake ad near the end of this broadcast, let us know!
