Yes--i think there was some guilt. The guy already had one bad Arctic trip ending with him eating his boots. Second trip was doomed! Another great story of early Arctic adventure is 'Icebound' by A Pitzer. Each day is survival in wooden clogs trying not to be eaten by polar bears.

If she was born a man, hers wld have been a hero story. Still, I don't think I wld want to be friends with her. Absolutely wild the lengths she went to pretend that Franklin discovered the NW Passage. Just obsessed w controlling history. Good book!

I did wonder why Grace didn't balance the centrifuge though.

In 48 hours I've watched Project Hail Mary twice. Cried and cheered at same parts. What a movie!

Mowat has gotten into all sorts of trouble with 'facts'. I had that in mind when reading Ordeal by Ice 🧐. Looking forward to reading this! Already ordered.

Our paper 'What determines transfer of carbon from plants to mycorrhizal fungi?' was one of top 10 most-cited papers published in @newphyt.bsky.social in 2024. Thanks to the research community for considering our ideas and arguments.

I just finished volume 1 of Farley Mowat's Ordeal by Ice. So I'm very interested in this book!

I'm stunned too. That someone finally said something.

This needs attention. Suzanne Simard threatened legal action against a journalist asking critical questions. This is not how science works. Brave of @aislingirwin.bsky.social to report.

I had the pleasure of seeing these arborglyphs when visiting Joseph in the field. When it comes to tree carving, people pick a big canvas close to the trail.

When science worships its own shadow On trees, eclipses, and the perils of belief

A follow-up to the debunk of trees anticipating solar eclipses. Wonderfully argued by Novoplansky, the lead author. (I accidentally deleted the original post).
