What’s up my nerds? New release from @ucpress.bsky.social! "André Bazin on Documentary,” new translations/edited by Dudley Andrew. I don’t have the bandwidth but...would be fun to do a light reading group around select entries! @benjaminschultzfig.bsky.social

from Benjamin, Arcades Project:
"When property has been abolished throughout Germany, these ultra-clever Berliners will set up a Démocratie Pacifique on the Hasenheide.... Watch out! A new Messiah will presently arise in the Uckermark—a Messiah who will tailor Fourier to accord with Hegel, erect a phalanstery upon the eternal categories, and lay it down as an eternal law of the self-developing idea that capital, talent, and labor all have a definite share in the product. This will be the New Testament of Hegelian-ism; old Hegel will be the Old Testament; the 'state,' the law, will be a 'taskmaster over Christ'; and the phalanstery, in which the privies are located in accordance with logical necessity, will be the 'new Heaven' and the 'new Earth, the new Jerusalem descending from heaven decked out like a bride." Engels to Marx, Barmen, November 19, 1844, in Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Briefwechsel, vol. 1, 1844-1853, ed. Marx-Engels-Lenin Institut (Moscow and Leningrad, 1935), p. 11.22
[W10a,3)
Only in the summery middle of the nineteenth century, only under its sun, can one conceive of Fourier's fantasy materialized.

Gugusse et l'Automate (1897) Méliès
Gugusse et l'Automate (1897) Méliès YouTube video by Films by the Year

A more than timely rediscovery of the first 1897 robot-film.

Especially given what @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social said today at @princetoncdh.bsky.social about how we shouldn't buy AI company's framing AI as genial automata.
(In hindsight, and with Benjamin's "Mechanical Turk," an instructional film…)

Beneath the Information, the Operation: Harun Farocki and the Work of Images - Journal #162 Tom Holert on “operational images” in the work of Harun Farocki.

«In the early 2000s … Farocki clearly recognized how images used in operations function as effective means of exclusion, destruction, and the rendering invisible of entire populations.» (Tom Holert)

“Computers Never Make Mistakes”: Judy Malloy’s Bad Information | Archives of American Art Journal: Vol 65, No 1 In 1986, Judy Malloy (b. 1942) invited members of the pre-Web, online arts platform Art Com Electronic Network (ACEN) to share fake information as part of her project Bad Information. She later organized this crowdsourced, fictive data into a database on ACEN. In this and related works, Malloy used information management techniques to critique a lack of nuance within cultural attitudes about technology in the 1980s, tying concerns about the perceived authority of computer-mediated knowledge to conceptual art’s preoccupation with information as the emergent form of cultural production. Drawing on archival material including correspondence from the Fred Truck Papers at the Archives of American Art, this essay analyses multiple versions of Bad Information. Malloy’s construction of a corpus of “bad information” grappled with the difficulties in distinguishing between true and false in a cultural context of accelerating information exchange and technological valorization, portending the current distribution of mis- and disinformation online.
