The Church equates itself with God, thus obedience to the man-made institution is obedience to God. Not actually, but it’s easy to manipulate people into making these connections. In the same way, Republicans brainwashed the base to equate God with party. Defy the party, defy religion, defy God.
It goes back to Jesus Himself turning tables and the leave unto Caesar what is his thing.
Citing God isn’t really about God, but about an attempt to bypass independent thought with a lifetime of blind obedience to authority. It’s very psychology based.
Going a step further, notice religious rhetoric rises as he feels his base is at risk.
The Church has a long history of being at odds with itself as a spiritual leader on one hand and on the other, riding the slippery slope of organized religion becoming a space for power-hungry grifters to land.
I think the Commandments are a bit misunderstood. They’re not just about how you treat each other, but a way to keep oneself off a slippery slope, how to keep your soul well.
