Presumably the EU will also be imposing sanction on Israel for the Gaza blockade and on the UDA for the Cuban and Venezuela blockades? Obvs.

Critical data struggles

“It’s really been driven by speculation,” said Andrew Yip, an organizer with SVG Progressive Action. “Right now, you know, the faster your data center can process information, the more money can make. So that’s why we’re seeing larger data centers with more processing capabilities, meaning more energy use, more pollution, more water use. And so when we saw that come into Monterey Park, you know, just hearing all the horror stories from across the country. Yeah, we had to fight back.”

Monterey Park may be the first city in California to ban data centers (and not just pause them); if the voters give them the thumbs down in June, it will be the first time American citizens directly vote to ban them.

"Monterey Park becomes the first city in California to ban "all data centers within city limits""

Extremely clean and elegant quote here. This is pretty much it folks:

I had a great time yesterday providing an online session with undergrads at Stellenbosch University on 40-years working in digital development (ICT4D). Now traveling to Reading to do a face-to-face session with postgraduate students there. #HappyRetirement

ICE has spun a massive surveillance web. We talked to people caught in it The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and Border Patrol, is using a broad web of surveillance tools — purchased as its budget has ballooned under this administration — to monitor, ap...

Why are people worried about facial recognition and automatic car number plate recognition? Just follow how ICE is using artificial intelligence to link this data, violate human rights, support snatch squads and fill deportation concentration camps.

Does that also work as "All violence is driven by a powerholder trying to establish dominance"? It seems to be the case that violence underwrites all power structures and that all power structures exert violence?

This strategy—using fake AI profiles to boost political causes—was tested during the 2022 recalls in San Francisco.
We called them the "Wencils" and they disappeared after being mapped and exposed. And now:

"In this document, cited by Mediapart, the DGSE considers it “highly probable” that the company is able to know which numbers are targeted by its clients “& possibly even the data exfiltrated,” contrary to what the Israeli company has repeatedly claimed in its defense against allegations of misuse."

I first used Amazon because it was great at finding me cheap ($1) second-hand books, which I loved, but eventually the algorithm only showed me $30-100 books. I uninstalled Amazon for this reason & because of its warehouse & data centres. I miss the convenience but there are more important things.
