I join @jyjamespark.bsky.social, @globalsarang.bsky.social, and @rajakorman.bsky.social to offer thoughts on the smörgåsbord of diplomacy around the APEC summit this week.
My focus is on the escalation–de-escalation cycle in Trump’s attempts to negotiate with China.

This got lost in the chaos, but here’s some (conditional) good news via @jyjamespark.bsky.social: N Korea will negotiate if the US drops the demand to denuclearize.
Denuclearization has long been an impractical precondition. Trump is willing to throw out old shibboleths on a whim, so let’s go!
Thank you John Carl!
Good piece from @jyjamespark.bsky.social
North Korea doesn’t want to talk about disarmament - but it might be wiling to talk about arms control. If so, the US should take them up on it. responsiblestatecraft.org/north-korea-...
In my latest, I explain why it makes sense that ROK Pres Lee Jae Myung passed on this year's NATO summit. Long story short, the stakes and benefits involved weren't significant, and Lee made a sensible decision in line with his principle of pragmatic diplomacy. shorturl.at/wWh4I
Tomorrow, 9am ET!

In my latest piece, I preview tomorrow's ROK presidential election. The likely winner Lee Jae-myung will be given a tough task from day 1, having to navigate through complex alliance issues including tariffs, military cost-sharing, and strategic positioning toward China. shorturl.at/76b7H

This is not an established fact and is certainly not true for realistic attack scenarios. The current system might--might!--be able to stop a single ICBM, but even that is debatable since tests occur under controlled conditions and even then the record isn't great. www.wsj.com/politics/nat...
Just a laughable situation…
Apart from whatever mythical constitutional reform Han DS thinks resolves this, PPP could take steps to win--or at least be competitive--in general elections. Instead, PPP has been trounced past two times. So maybe start with that?
I’m very excited to be taking part in this wonderful program with this incredible group of thinkers on China policy. There’s no better time to be challenging old assumptions and insisting on new possibilities.
Congrats to my colleague @jwdwerner.bsky.social for joining this exceptional list of China scholars!
An excellent new paper just out from my colleague @jyjamespark.bsky.social.
James reviews dangerous pressures building up in nuclear doctrine on both sides of the Korean peninsula and shows how rethinking effective deterrence could remedy the situation.

Biden left the US and China standing on a powder keg and Trump just lit the fuse.

This is something to watch. Trump’s statements and his foreign policy picks all indicate real potential for diplomacy with North Korea—but success rests on not repeating the mistakes of the first term. @jyjamespark.bsky.social with the details:
