🇫🇷 Sen. Claude Malhuret:

"I compared the Trump presidency to Nero's court. I was wrong. It's a court of miracles. An anti-vax ex heroin addict as Health Sec; a climate skeptic as Econ Sec; an alcoholic TV host as Def Sec; an ex Qatari agent as Attorney Gen; a Putin groupie as Homeland Security Sec."

Natural History: A Reading List - JSTOR Daily This annotated bibliography samples scholarship on the rich—and difficult—history of natural history.

Just come across this really useful list on the links between natural history and empire, featuring moi as ‘essential reading’. Perfect if you’re interested in museums or science more broadly too. Also ideal for passing to students as a starting point.

Fighting Back: A Citizen’s Guide to Resistance Ordinary people have more power than they know.

The question I've been asked most as we endure the legal dumpster fire that is the Trump Administration is, "What can we do about it when it's not election season?" @timothynoah.bsky.social has an outstanding essay in the @newrepublic.com addressing that question. newrepublic.com/article/1931...

Columbia should have said, ‘see you in court,’ not ‘yes, Mr President.’ | Margaret Sullivan Institutions must resist thuggish bullying. There is no satisfying Trump. He will move the goalposts again and again

"One of my teachers at Columbia was Joseph Brodsky...and he said 'look,' he said, 'you Americans, you are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.'"

This is such a good piece by Alvin Tillery, especially in putting Gay's academic record in context.

Two points. Black students at Harvard, including Gay, were told that hate speech was protected. No problem with white students flying confederate flags on campus.

To commemorate the 120th anniversary of her death, a statue of Louise Michel will be erected facing Sacré-Coeur, “monument any-communard qu’elle pourra défir du regard.” A lovely act of justice. 🗃️

Fascinating that there is so much data about these remains - since so often collections of human remains focused on typology of skulls, etc rather than the individuals from whom they came. This will be an important research tool- thank you for your work on this inventory.

It certainly didn’t escape notice that there was little concern on the part of archaeologists leading the dig that reaching the Bronze Age material required us to dig through what were presumably Bedouin graves of fairly recent date located on the site.
