Apart from the new #Gnome effort, there also is an interesting experiment of a #Rust terminal-client with #Ratatui -- for others to start from should they feel they need some enjoyable distraction :)

#Chatmail clients typically use the Rust […]

the public #chatmail relay list https://chatmail.at/relay covers about ~20% or so of chat relays we heart about and have traces or hints from, and we definitely don't see everything -- which is how it should be :)

What if all public funding and all private donations to our efforts stop tomorrow?

Users should be fine for years thanks to the wonderful world-wide community of #chatmail relay operators 💜 Relays are dirt cheap to run. Also, our developments are much cheaper and less complex compared to what […]

Do you want to live in a world where private digital communication is not possible anymore? That's a growing reality for many people world-wide.

Private communication is extremely important to salvage into the digital realm and it's not just […]

#deltachat contributors range from age 16 to 65, spanning diverse genders and even more countries and cultures. We have many discussions, and also conflicts but we usually don't carry those out in big public groups but rather go for 1:1s and generally small-group discussions. There is no central […]

Under the hood, we are using IETF Internet Messaging specifications commonly tagged as "email". Sounds old, right? Actually there is a lot of new stuff going on! For example, #chatmail apps now fully support:

- RFC9788 ("Header Protection") to achieve minimal metadata

- RFC9580 ("OpenPGP") to […]

@chiefbongo and no worries, contact discovery is more or less a no-go area, even though it is lightly discussed sometimes, but certainly not via a centralized server, let alone one that we would run.

@chiefbongo yes, calls are end-to-end encrypted. Sorry for not making this more explicit. We also still have work to do to update docs and get everything stabilized 😅

@jaseg in the very first sentence we try to clarify the scope, i.e. "With the latest 2.48+ releases, a chat message reveals close to zero metadata to servers." The key phrase here is "to servers", and we then detail all the data that was made invisible to the server.
If you want to discuss this […]

@jaseg yes, it's about message header metadata, and the fact that no cryptographic identities are visible on the transport layer, making it hard for hostile servers to track anything when users change relays. This blog post is not a security whitepaper, which we admittedly still need to update […]

After three intense months of work from more than a dozen contributors, #deltachat 2.48 releases are rolling. Maybe the most feature-packed releases ever?

- "zero metadata" messaging

- native Audio/Video calls on Android and iOS, as well as UbuntuTouch

- Group and Channel descriptions

- A […]

@ahalam all the mentioned metadata in the top post resides in the encrypted parts of messages. The server does not see group descriptions, names, avatars etc. We'll soon do a blog post on this and recent advances to "zero metadata" operations, stay tuned :)

End-to-End Encryption is good but metadata protection counts as much. Names, group descriptions and memberships, avatars, who talks to whom ...

Both #deltachat and #signal go to great length to protect all the metadata that WhatsApp grants itself gratuitously […]

Fun funding fact: If we had 10 times more money to develop #deltachat , the #chatmail relay network and the #webxdc secure mini app ecosystem, we would still have ten times less than what signal has (let alone Whatsapp or telegram). But we don't want to increase nudging people for donations, as […]

I know #Signal is very popular, but at least for me, using NVDA, the desktop client is far less screen reader friendly than the mobile clients. The mobile clients work far better for me, but I honestly don't use my phone for much these days outside of being a media player that can make phone […]

@liaizon @julien see https://delta.chat/en/help#remove-account -- if you delete your profile from your devices nobody will have the private key anymore. The addresses (if on a relay) are going to stop existing after some time. There is virtually no residue then.

1 month ago 0 0 2 0

@julien If you want to stop using Delta Chat you can just un-install it. If you are in group chats, it's nice for the others to leave group chats before deinstall.

Our strong focus on end to end encryption and zero metadata does mean that one of the original project notions of "you can use delta chat as a lightweight cleartext email client and your contacts don't need to care" was deprioritized since some time now and remains available rather for […]

some insights from #deltachat forum gardening 🌸

- we’re getting about 7 new feature proposals per week, with over 1k ideas shared so far

- we aim to keep things simple and focused, so we often have to say "no!", but:

- we do listen: over the years, we’ve fulfilled about ONE THIRD of your […]

Direct mention on groups User Story: I have created a group in Delta Chat and started to chat with some friends. I am able to say something like “@tom: you are right” so it is clear to what friend I am replying to, “tom” is the contact name I have set for my friend but other users see the name they have set for Tom, internally Delta Chat replace “@tom” with Tom’s email so this even work for people that don’t use DC or that don’t have Tom as a contact. Sometimes the group get a bit noisy, and I am somewhat busy, rather...

@tchambers you're not doing anything wrong ❤️ "@user", so called "mentions", are not implemented yet, but discussed at support.delta.chat/t/direct-mention-on-grou...

#DeltaChat breaks the one app, one ID rule of phone-number-based apps by supporting multiple chat profiles. This allows for true private messaging where you can keep a public identity for the Web or Fediverse separate from a private one for family and friends. Managing multiple selves is a new […]

The total privacy of #DeltaChat has a trade-off: there is no global directory. Connecting for private messaging requires a direct QR scan or using an existing channel to exchange invite links. The hurdle is often the readiness of friends, family, or those around you to switch. However, once […]
