Only when i scream do i realise that my pain is the lock. Finding the notch of my ulna bone, i twist the key in the lock of my agony, and open.

My fave function of imprisonment in horror is as a catalyst for change. So that pit of worst nightmares / hell of own making pushes a character to make the leap of faith they need to break their loop of self restrictive / destructive behaviours. Even if they don’t make it… 💀

do lean into that meta-space when it comes to imprisonment. Horror offers such flexibility of execution & interpretation of ideas. I have used this concept in my own work, sometimes merging the physical and metaphorical, especially when a character is as haunted as her house.

Hello, i’m Frazer & i write everything from body horror to folk horror via psychological thriller - oh, and the occasional space armadillo. My favourite form of imprisonment in horror is being trapped in your own skull with the voices that only you can hear.

The older i get the more i realise that walking out of doors with your arms behind your back really is a comfy mode of travel. If like me you are knocking on a bit you might like to try it.

A social media post screengrab with a scanned book page. Text reads:
“When I worked at BMP, the Head of Television commuted in from Brighton every day.
He started reading The Exorcist on the train.
He said he thought it was the most evil book he'd ever read.
In fact, he said it was so evil he couldn't finish it.
So, at the weekend, he went to the end of Brighton pier and threv it as far as he could.
So I went to the bookshop.
I bought another copy.
Then I ran it under the tap.
And left it in his desk drawer.
For him to find.”
